None of them. Very few solos do. Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. A masterclass on choosing the perfect notes.
I can generally hum/sing most guitar solos from famous songs (or from the music I listen to at least) but for some reason I just don't think Prince writes a good solo. If I had to think of one the only one that would spring to mind would be SexyMF. I generally keep an ear out for a solo too, having been playing since I was 16 (21 years now). I'm old

Are you confusing a good solo with being able to play within scales and modes? The latter is the easy part. I Like It There. How's that for a dull bit of soloing? You mention Cream. Would you be kind enough to state at which time of the song the solo is? I've listened but sure can't find it. And Dolphin? Please tell me you're joking? I love Prince. Hardly a day goes by without playing his music. I love his guitar playing and find it unique (we won't mention his over-reliance on Boss affecting his tone). Going to the O2 last year to see him for the first time was a pilgrimage for me so please don't label me as someone who dislikes him. But I can't accept that he is a good writer (wrighter?) of guitar solos. Great guitarist? Yes. Great soloist? No.

Duane Allman (The Allman Brothers), Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Billy Gibbons, Robin Trower, David Gilmour (God), Robert Fripp, Adrian Smith, Peter Green (wow), Chuck Berry, Joe Satriani, Brian May, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King (how fucking good?!), Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Larry Carlton, Al Di Meola, George Harrison, John McLaughlin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) Sonny Landreth and Angus and Malcolm Young (ACDC in case your head's still stuck in your arse).
Well those are just a few names I've picked from my iTunes library. Now feel free to compare Prince's most melodic and competent solo with one of theirs. And besides 'thebanishedone' the post asked for "favourite" solo. See you next tuesday ![]()

The playing in Live 4 Love is quintessentially Prince. But is there a solo? I'm not gonna let this drop until you guys realise that Prince doesn't play a solo per se. He solos, but he doesn't produce a solo in the standard manner ie: middle of the song and a song within itself.

But I still fail to find many, if any, examples of Prince playing a standard solo. I think you are missing my point

Nooo? I'm shocked. Shall we clarify then that we are not talking about a standard solo that appears within the usual structure of a song and also one that may or may not be more a case of guitar soloing faded into or out of the main composition? If that is indeed the case then I still can't think of a case where Prince has created a solo that has captured the spirit of people to such an extent that it is classed as one of the greatest examples of electric guitar playing since Leo Fender thought of a good way to spend an afternoon off. Okay maybe Let's Go Crazy. I'll give you that one. It sure made me want to play more as a wee nipper. But even then it's more a case of widdling away which let's face it we all do once we've been playing for more than two years and have learnt the pentatonics and modes. Oh hell, I'll chuck in some minor licks to make it sound all lovely. I'm not saying that I find Prince a bad guitar player. He's not. Far from it. In fact I love the way he plays. But it's the little fills and rhythm work that he does that I find fantastic. Yes he can solo but I still believe he hasn't written (wrighten) a solo worthy of the Great Guitar Solo Hall Of Fame. When it appears in Guitarist, fully tabbed and on the accompanying cd, I will gladly eat the pages. Until then I'll argue till I'm blue in the face that he can not and will not ever come close to creating something as beautiful as David Gilmour did with Comfortably Numb. Neither the first or the second solo within that song. I'm shutting up now. I'm in a shitty mood and it seems to be coming out here.
