Chaos and disorder is the legacy of the old, angry Prince. Great.

zannalee had been around since 93 with different lyrics. the released version added sound effects as well
the same december was around at least since late 94 early 95 but i'm glad i rock therefore i am and dig u better dead is finally getting some love cause those songs r funky!!! man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

When this album 1st came out I didn't like it and rarely played it. We all know P was havin' problems with Warner Bros. and what not. I wanted 2 support him. I bought it but didn't play it until a few friends of mine said 2 check it out. I'm glad I did but it's not on my Top 10 Fav albums. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I've always liked it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

As an entire album its quite uneven, i think.
Most of the songs sound like the basistracks were recorded in a band-setting, 'live' in the studio, most musicians playing their parts at the same time. That 'sound' gives those songs a certain freshness and livelieness that sometimes was lacking from the earlier (more labored/produced) NPG-albums: Diamonds and Pearls, parts of Symbol and the Gold Experience. Allthough the compositions may be not that great all of the time, the energy and playfullness in which they are delivered sure felt as a 'fresh shower' to me at the time of release. But i have two complaints about this 'album': First, the use of sound-effects and samples often feels unneccesary. Its almost like Prince felt ashamed / too naked to release such a back-to-basics set of songs, and did ad those effects to say: Hey, i am still groundbreaking, no traditional rock and blues from me, i am still a creative musician. Its kind of a 'forced' step because of...what? My view: Man, when you want to rock, just rock. When you want to play the blues, just do it. Second, the last two songs simply sound like they are just put unto the album because otherwise it would be TOO short to be sold as 'an album'. Dig U better Dead is one of those autopilot-funk jams Prince could write within 10 minutes, Had U is just a sketch too pompous for its own good. Finally i would like to give praise for one of the most 'hated' songs here on the Org (it seems): I rock, therefore i am. Okay, those rappers and toasters on the song are mediocre, the lyrics might sound a bit contrived, but in the beat-department this song is a jewel: One nation under a groove, but then harder and nastier. And the vocal interchange between Prince and Rosie is a lovely mix between pop, funk and gospel. IMO this song is one of Princes best funk/dance-cuts from the nineties: urgent, tense, in your face.

While far from Prince's best, I think it's more than the "throwaway album" lots of people make it out to be. There are some solid tracks, a couple fillers, but overall, pretty solid and groovin'.

True but i meant its his most "rock" album meaning it rocks harder than any other of his and no there not throwaways there ace I Rock, Dig U and even Had U (tho short) are brilliant tracks..true the album isnt without its flaws...but then again neither are most of his albums lets be honest and for an album thats just to get out of a contract u cant really complain...I luv it anyway...well apart from Right The Wrong Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

"Theres 1 more verse 2 da story i need another piece of ur eee-aar" = Cringe altho must say Face Down was an excellent effort (his best IMO)....wish i could say the same for Mr Goodnight Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

I loved it. I Like It There reminded me of Prince in the old days so much. Rosie had been out of the picture for a good 3 years by the time this came out, so you know those songs had been around. A lot of those songs were played at parties in the years prior. Great cd though. TRUE BLUE
