The Q of U... what's so great about it?

Why do so many people seem to like The Question Of U? It's just an average blues song with some handclapping. It's not even among the best on the album, IMO. I think the following songs are all superior:

Thieves In The Temple
Joy In Repetition
Elephants And Flowers
New Power Generation

Anyway, I'm just wondering what makes it so special to everyone else...

End.

"question of u" is classic... no question... now, i will say that "joy in repetition" is a classic on the same level... and i will admit that "elephants and flowers" is awfully close, but not quite there... and "theives in the temple" is a really strong prince song, that i would maybe tell you is a 3rd best on that cd or something...

but to say that "new power generation" is better than "question of u"... are you outta your damn mind..? it's a good track and all... i don't hate that song or anything... it's got a good message... but damn... it's not better than "question of u"...

confuse

i don't get it... maybe i'm missing something..

looks like i'll be listening to "grafitti bridge" tonight... i gotta figure this out...

The song just exudes sensuality and spirituality. It is a mystical, masterful piece- the best on the album.

Heard the song for the first time live and when you heard that POOMP. POOPMP_POOMP beat in yer tummy...

Then again. It is great on album too. The single minded thump of that song, the anguish, the guitar solo.
It gets the respect it desrves...
The other songs are my faves of the album, btw. Without NPG, cuz that was raped to fit the album. I like the demo for that waaay better.
And Joy's intro was cut short, grumble, but that is another thread...

The Question of U was gonna be the next single after New Power Generation, there even was a live video clip 4 it. But due 2 bad sales of GB they decided 2 cancel and opt 4 the D&P project...
I surely would've loved 2 have a long studio version of Q of U , kinda like the live versions he played at the Nude tour..

Between this song and Joy In Repetition you have Serious emotion and Serious Beauty from Prince and those Flutes just send you to Never,Neverland and you know something well Prince could put you in an excited extra terrestial state of consciousness and you know I don't Imbibe on Drugs but trip on Acid to this tune. It's Awesome. Prince makes my Clitoris sing Halleluah. He is my God is right cause he is here on Earth and I can see him. Nobody makes me Happier besides my child and well that's everything is right. Nobody is as Breathtaking. His music is his message and I love his music so much it collapses me takes my energy cause it's Awesome/Intense. Earthy/Sensual. He has layed his trap on me and I'm Devoted to his Funk. Prince gives ya what you Need/what you Crave/Hunger for and it's all Goodness. Prince Shines with White Light Diamonds.

Natasha said "but trip on Acid to this tune. It's Awesome" - already have!! And it is awesome!! In fact, most Prince tunes on acid are awesome - so many other details come to light! A little bit of psychedelic enhancement every now and then doesn't hurt - ask Paul McCartney!! wink

The Question of U is where 2 souls meet, in a hypnotic, sensual melody that plays in ones mind. It will possess U.

His music is his message

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I think his music/lyrics are his message, and if we listen clearly enough, we know what he is saying.

Back to the point, I think 'Question of U' is a great record--it is the mood and the sentiment that makes it. It is like a reworking of 'Under the Cherry Moon'.

But I agree with most about 'Joy in Repetition'--that song is a masterpiece of message, feeling, timing and vocal dexterity. It is similar to 'The Ballad of Dorothy Parker', in that the song tells a story, rather than being verse, chorus, verse.

Question2002

The Question of U is a classic beautifully
done by Prince the flute playing alone is
great it is spiritual and so moving when
Prince played the guitar mades you close
your eyes and just feel. Its mystical
makes you feel angels or fairies are dancing

Prince played this song at the first celebration
on piano and boy I tell it was sooo moving
brought tears to my eyes. This song haunts
me it always stays on my mind.

One of best songs that Prince has written yes

It's like a cross between an old spritual and a carnival soundtrack, all laced together with beautiful guitar solos. It's hauntingly beautiful, and unique.

it was also intended as the first single, hence the fact it was played on the Nude tour.
