Wow- people dissin' 1999 again. shake THAT ALBUM IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. Over-indulgence you say? I say not! Those songs need the full 7-9 minutes to extend the groove and send the listener on an aural voyage unlike no other. Just listen in "Automatic" to the synth after Prince says, "Fasten your seatbelts." The ensuing musical ride is rewarding and mystical- Prince was truly venturing into uncharted territory. And it just doesn't end there.

"All the Critics Love U in New York" is in my opinion the funkiest song ever recorded. It is singular in its vision and its experimentation. Nothing in Prince's catalogue sounds remotely like it and nothing ever will again. It is a rampant, charged funk fest. "Body don't wanna quit, gotta get another hit" says it all.

"Lady Cab Driver" is one of the moments on the album when Prince combines silky funk with an emotional message. Can't you almost FEEL those funky guitar riffs exploring the curves of the cab driver's body? It's sex as therapy and release and funk as escape.

"DMSR" is a Prince ANTHEM. "All I wanna do is dance, dance music sex romance" really summed up Prince's career up to that point, being the rebellious funkster that he was, not caring about critical recognition but rather fighting to be accepted.

One thing I love about this album is that it was the last album he recorded before he blew up. It is very evident in the music that Prince was desperately trying to impress the listener with his talents. The apocalyptic theme carries through with the attitude- Prince was going to go out with a last "hurrah" with this one if he didn't make it. That is why the music is so timeless and enduring- it is Prince showcasing his talents, proving that he was worthy of the massive success that followed. What an album!

I would remove "Free" and replace it with "Moonbeam Levels".I would also remove "All The Critics Love U In New York" and replace it with either "ExtraLovable" or "Purple Music".

But of course,'1999' is a masterpiece just the way it is smile

I would also consider swapping "All The Critics" for the unreleased track "Purple Music" - it's in a similar style, and I think it's better.

I agree with this choice. Both songs are similiar, but I think I like "Purple Music" just a little better.

No doubt! It personifies the man. In fact, I was floored when they took off the track to release it as a one disk CD! shocked

All or nothing baby... biggrin
