This is an easy one.

"Free" and "International Lover"

I love both these songs, but they do seem out of place on 1999 ("Free especially")

I would also consider swapping "All The Critics" for the unreleased track "Purple Music" - it's in a similar style, and I think it's better.

Free, All The Critics, and International Lover are all disposable. Some people may disagree with me here, but I could do without DMSR and Lady Cab Driver as well. Those songs are just fillers to me, especially DMSR. I can see why it was removed on the initial pressing. Let's Pretend We're Married and Automatic are the only extended songs on that album that keep me interested throughout...

End.

as much as i love SOTT, i think "1999" is still probably my favorite prince album... i never, never get tired of hearing that cd... and there is not a single song that i would change... i would like to have outtakes and b-sides added, but only if time permitted on the cd, without having to remove any of the songs already on it...

but to say that "international lover" is disposable... you must be trippin'... crank up that jam, and light some candles, break out the bath oils & whatnots, and tell me if you still think that song is disposable... disbelief i think not...

Um, why does the fact that I also like Michael Jackson automatically invalidate my opinion?

Just think how much better it will sound when it's remastered...if that time will ever come.

seriously... in my opinion (or maybe it's just my copy) "1999" has the worst sound quality of any prince cd... the drums & keyboards sound muffled as hell... the bass does boom... i don't know... it's a cd that's meant to jam, but because of the sound, it can only jam so much...

if there were one cd of his that needs remastering, this is my vote...

oh, happy happy, joy joy...

All right, I should have prefaced my opinion by stating that I'm not a fan of "funk" in the purest sense of the word. I don't like music just for funkiness' sake. So maybe that's why I don't care for DMSR, Lady Cab Driver, and All The Critics as much as others here. I tend to prefer songs that are more synth based with a pop slant like Let's Pretend We're Married, Automatic, and Something In The Water...

End.

Nuh uh. You have to take it in context. When cd's were first introduced the recording technology wasn't as dynamic as it is today. That's why if you've compared old cd's that are not remastered with recent recordings, or recent remasters, the recent ones sound SO much better. CD's sounded good when they were first released to the market, but there was no 21st century technology to compare it with back then.

Listen to the sound of 1999 compared with recent cd's. It's quite TINY.

Thats what Im sayin'...that I expected it to sound great because it was this "new cd technology of sound" that it was heralded as..then I got "moded" because it was not true for 1999.

It's not just your copy, it's mine too, and I'd think all of them. The contrast is STUNNING when you compare the sound quality to a quality sounding cd. 1999 needs the treatment like Calista Flockhart needs meat on her bones.
