It's on Kazaa.

As coincidence would have it, I had just downloaded this song on Kazaa. It's pretty funny. But the backing music is basically "777-9311". It was still cool, though.

There's another TheTime track that DOES include Prince's vocals: Tricky (b-side of Jungle Love)... which is a really funny song . I think you've got them twisted.

Morris does the vocals on grace with Vanity. It's the song tricky that is a B side to ice cream castle that Prince does most of the vocals

One of my favorite joints.

One simple test will dispel once and for all the confusion regarding whose vocal it really is on 'Grace': just run a portion of that track (or the entire song, if you prefer) through a digital voice decoder, then match the result with any track featuring a bona-fide vocal by Prince and, bingo, you will find that despite the huge difference apparent to the human ear, it is Prince all the way.

The same will apply to tracks like 'Tricky' and, of course, the demo version of 'Chocolate'.
I can readily cite several other examples of mistakenly attributed vocals I have been able to pinpoint this way. One case that springs to mind is the spoken intro during the first few seconds at the beginning of 'Soulpsychodelicide'. Often attributed to George Clinton (who otherwise features quite prominently on this track), the spoken intro is, surprisingly enough, delivered by Tony Mosley.
A more recent example of a vocal being assumed to be by someone else is the start and the end of 'Peace', supposedly featuring some humorous asides by Morris Hayes. However, the above spoken segments do match Kip Blackshire's vocal on the 18th December 1999 live performance at Paisley Park (from the 'Rave Un2 The Year 2000' release).

It is widely acknowledged that Prince did often lay down guide vocals for Morris Day to copy exactly, inflection by inflection, and down to the last mannerism, pretty much utilizing the same strategy Prince adopted for St. Paul during the Family sessions (although Prince's guide vocal was clearly much more obvious on this occasion than on The Time). In fact, this was one of the main reasons why The Time members - despite the fact that they were a strong live working unit - were becoming increasingly frustrated by Prince constantly wanting to control everything down to the last detail, as they felt they could contribute more to the music and the image.

Let's not forget that The Time was always intended to be a vehicle for Morris Day, and the band was created primarily because Prince didn't want to turn his back on his R&B audience and needed and outlet for material he decided could never have released under his "Prince" persona.

A little off topic, but who's the voice who answers the phone on Vanity 6's 'If the girl answers, don't hang up' song? I always thought it was Morris, but with headphones on the other day, i couldn't tell for sure if it was Prince or Morris. Anyone know??

George originally wrote this spoken word piece for a Funkadelic track called 'Nosebleed' which was to have appeared on the unreleased 'By the Way of the Drum' album.




Actually, the "humorous asides" in question are the work of Johnnie Blackshire, Kip's brother. Kip is the guy laughing hysterically in the background.

Yeah. And little did Dez Dickerson know half of America would be ringing his phone off the hook after '777 9311' became The Time's biggest hit single up to then.

How in the world could Morris say that Funk was dead? He was the Funk that was happening at that time.
