Like many Prince fans I love this song - when I first heard SOTT I thought this was a very different & orginal song. But I would agree with you that it wasn't a great choice for the 2nd single off the album. That being the 2nd single plus there was no video to go with it did not help sales of SOTT. | |

Try listening again Logger. There is a magnificient 'hook' at the beginning, just after the 'wedding march' music, it goes into really heavy, slow synth. Intoxicating. His voice is hypnotic on this song, it is filled with such longing. The man is truly androgynous inside. As he wrote on 'I Would Die 4 U' thus: "I'm not a woman, I'm not a man, I am something that you'll never understand." BTW, I love the way 'If I was your Girlfriend' segues into 'Strange Relationship'. regards, andyf --------

Yeah logger your all all alone. If I Was Your Girlfriend is my favorite Prince song and love to see him perform it live its great. If you think those are bad songs go to the Come album and listen to Solo see if you can listen to that one. That's my least favorite. | |

WTF!! This is one of Prince's greatest songs, an absolute classic.
If the SOTT album version dont do it for ya, check out the SOTT concert video...the performance of 'If I was your girlfriend' is just amazing...in fact that version is better than the albun version in my opinion. Please do yourself a favour and check it out!! I can't sing, but I got soul | |

i agree that it's a bad single. but this may be the very best example of Prince's lyrical talent. straightforward, clever, simple, universal, and yet all very off the wall. How is it a bad single? Are you smoking crack? How you gonna get my back when you fronting. | |

I fell in love with this song the minute I heard it and it is still one of my favorites. I don't think I could ever get sick of it, everything about it just hypnotizes me.

that being said, I hear you about releasing it as a single...it was an odd choice that completely STOPPED the momentum of Sign O' The Times...some good songs just don't make good singles... | |
