Prince wearing wigs/bits of fake hair?

I remember in a thread or two a while ago, people were mentioning how prince had bits of fake hair put in with his own hair during the controversy/purple rain era? Is this true? Can someone clear up how/why etc?

Peace & B Wild

OMG.....that is not true. There is no such thing as "Afro-Caribbean" hair. Absolutely not. I am of Caribbean descent, although I identify with being African-American because some of my siblings and I were first generation born within the states. My mother has gorgeous thick long, black hair all her life, one to make any woman jealous, and has been mistaken to be from various races from East Indian to Hispanic. Thick hair is hard to manage even if it is of a straight quality, and whether you are White, Black or hispanic. And no, johno2, people from the Caribbean don't wear hair weaves because their hair is hard to manage, Women from every single race wear hair weaves mostly for fashion these days, it's more of a fashion trend.

Black women who "choose" to wear hair extensions may do so because weaves in general are definitely easier to work with, and gets you out the house faster especially when you want to go to a club, etc., and not worry about your hair sweating, frizzing or getting flat, and also easier to deal with during bad weather, but they don't necessarily wear them because they don't have hair. Black women have hair. This is not back in the 60s or 70s where they don't have good hair products for Black women, they do and that is why since the 90s you see more Black women with long hair. I believe there's been a stigma attached to everytime you see a black women with long hair, everyone thinks she's wearing a hair weave. Not true.

All the members of my family have either straight, curly, kinky, or wavy hair, because of the many mixtures of races in my family, but please, there is no such thing as "Afro-Caribbean" hair...Whew! just wanted to clear that up and not mislead people. Hair is Hair. I know white people with kinky and frizzy hair, so you can never judge what type of hair a person from a particular race may have.

As far as Prince, if you look back at his younger pictures, the brotha always had a headful of hair. When a man perms his hair, well a black male anyway, of course it becomes a different texture because it is permed. I do think in the Musicology video, he put on a wig for that one, but the hair he wears now you can see it is definitely his own hair. A Black guy with long hair does not necessarily mean he is wearing extensions...and what does his hair have to do with his music anyway, doesn't make any sense....but sorry for the long post anyway.

for Christ sake im a hair dresser and at college afro hair was classed as afro carrabean ok, and thats what prince has and it is true some people with this hair type wear weaves or wigs, and yes it may b the fasion, but if some with afro hair say wanted a straight sleek bob for what ever reasons your telling me it wouldn't be easier for that person to wear a weave or wig than either having their hair chemically straightened or even trying to blow dry her hair straight every day. no need to get funny, btw i think prince's hair is cool, i liked how he had it in the lovesexy era and parade era best

Tell me what is "Afro-Caribbean" hair type though? Because I'd really like to know since I ma of Caribbean descent and have never heard of it. I think you have been mislead and that is why I responded to the post. Both my parents and maternal and paternal grandparents were born in the Caribbean. The women in my family have anywhere from straight hair, semi-straight, kinky hair often referred to as "nappy", wavy hair, curly, etc. various.hair types you will find in most people of African or Black hispanic descent depending on the mixture within their families.

Also, you obviously didn't read my entire post. I said women who wear hair weaves wear it because it is "easier" not because they don't have hair. Black women can perm their natural hair if they want to wear it straight or get a curly-perm or what they called back in the day (jheri-curl). They also were braids (extensions) to give their hair a rest. They can wear it natural, where it would be mostly thick and yes, harder to maintain because of the thickness.

All this with their own hair, but like I said, when they choose to wear a weave, it is because, of course, easier for many different reasons...less time consuming;don't have to curl your hair with rollers, less curling/flat-ironing damage with their own hair, and giving their hair a rest from all of the above. By wearing the weave hair, it gives their natural hair a chance to rest. I am a Black woman so I know.

As for "Afro-caribbean hair" I never heard of that. Black hair is Black hair. I am Jamaican and never heard of that term. People wear weaves for many differnt reason. "Hard to manage" is just one of the many reason why people use weaves. Black people are not the only one who uses weaves.

As a hairstylist, I will give my professional opinion on Prince's hair. During the Purple Rain era, I am not sure if he had hair weave mixed in, but in the 80's, many male pop/rock stars wore hair extensions (especially many of the Heavy Metal groups). I wouldn't be surprised if he had a few tracks during the Graffiti Bridge era. I am, however, almost certain that he currently wears a hair replacement system.

I agree. He is absolutley not au naturale'. He already said as much ten years ago.

Everywhere I go, people stop and stare
They just wanna see me swing this pretty hair
If there ever comes a time when it just won't grow
I'll keep it like my brother and buy some mo' - hey!

lol

p.s. who the hell knows for sure. But, his dad was bald.

The past 2 minutes discussing this is time I'm never getting back again.

No need to apologize, just trying to break down what you are trying to describe as "Black hair". The orger "quiet1 explained to me that your description of Black Hair is referred to Afro-Caribbean in the U.K. I guess because of huge Jamaican population and others from the Caribbean.

Okay, thank you! I didn't see this before my last post to johno2. I was wondering what johno2 was talking about. First time I have ever heard anyone refer to black hair as "Afro-Caribbean" when in America, not all Blacks have roots in the Caribbean. In America, Black hair texture is referred to as just "Black Hair" which pretty much includes all the ethnic groups within the Black family hair group. Thanks for explaining that and I'm sure johno2 will be happy that he/she doesn't have to see anymore posts from me on this subject.. lol

I am of Caribbean descent as well, but an orger named "thequiet1" just explained to me that, Black hair is referred to as "Afro-Caribbean" in the U.K. I guess because of the Jamaicans and people from other Caribbean islands that have moved there, and so that is how they refer to Black women's hair there...interesting. I guess you learn something new everyday here.

boxed few someone helped

I am talking about his afro when he was younger, which was his own hair. I am not talking about during his purple rain days. I find it funny though, how some people believe if they see a Black male or female with a head of their own hair, that they automatically assume it is false hair. rolleyes But you go ahead and believe what you want.

I remember my own mother swearing at a woman because she thought my mother was wearing a wig.
