mushy love watching him play piano. He played piano while performing When Two Are In Love during the Lovesexy tour, but he also started playing the beginning of a classical piece, but I don't know what the name of it was, everyone started clapping, and whistling, and he was all "Oh Please!" confused lol

Does everyone remember in Under the Cherry Moon, at the beginning, when he's just
mucking around, playing this nice little chromatic motif, very playfully?
That's bloody excellent, he doesn't show off his skills enough!!
If only he learned more from the jazz players, and really made a decent attempt
to conquer some jazz, not just add "jazzy" horns and swing interludes...that would be unreal. He seems to have so effortlessly mastered almost every for of music he has attempted (or at least made a startling enrty in the genre), except for jazz. He's never really cdelved into the harmonies of it, which is weird cause he's such a great improviser anyway. Somehow, I don't think he will change at this point though. He used to absorb new influences a lot more quickly, like all the french music he was surrounded with at the time of Parade... But as a piano player? He's amazing, precisely because he hasn't just ripped off Herbie Hancock, or Richard Tee, or Stevie Wonder, he really has his own individual approach.

Yes, but the madhouse stuff was based on 1 and 2 chord grooves for the most part,
I want to hear him get into some harmonic motion. And I want to hear him get deep into a hard swing, not just some riffy solos over the top of swinging drums (a la
if eye was the man in ur life). He's working with some of the best musos in the world, I'm sure they could teach him! ha ha. He should listen to some John Scofield, it might inspire him. It's not that he can't do it, I just think he's never really tried that hard. The madhouse stuff is as close as he's come, but most of the grooves are that straight 'robofunk' style. I want that bass to walk, baby!

Yes, he's a very underated piano player. I would say he's not the greatest technical player in terms of speed, precision and playing solos over complex chord progressions, but harmonically he's right up there. Some of his chord voicings are very subtle.

I think his playing on his version of A Case Of You is probably my favourite.
Did Quincy Jones say sething along the lines of, he was just a basic player?
Im sure Quincy Jones said something derogative about his piano skills...even before the lollypop incident.

I like his piano playing too! I think he plays a different instrument for his different side (or emotions), and I think the piano is the private quiet side of him.....his guitar is (or used to be) that wilder side.....he seems to talk through his instruments. But yeah, the piano needs to be heard more.
