Just heard "Black Sweat" on the radio and almost started playing "3121" again (maybe tomorrow). It's definately his best in recent times. Every track is at least above average, which I can't say for "Musicology".

This is a fantastic album. I love it from start to finish. Even the songs that aren't my favorite, I can still play the whole way through and that's only 1 maybe 2 songs. It's one of my favorite Prince CD's, no question. 3121 is still the bomb! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

3121 is mediocore and flat. That's how my ears heard it. it's okay. Prince says nothing new or groundbreaking on there. BOB4theFUNK

Like I said before... I'm not liking 3121 all that much... I think it's THE most commercial and mainstream album he's ever done. Just hearing the beginning of Incense and Candles sends a cold shiver down my spine. I hate that Auto-Tune distortion. I mean, I REALLY hate Incense and Candles. The chorus has potential, but the intro and verse drive me up the wall. It sounds like all the horrific mainstream R&B/Pop that I try to avoid. Ah well.
I go in and out of liking Black Sweat. I might not end up liking 3121, but I only plunked down 5 or 6 bucks for it. As for not being anything new for Prince... I think it is new. He made an album that sounds like everything else on the radio. That's a step in the wrong direction as far as I'm concerned. I'm looking forward to live versions that might restore the Prince sound to otherwise very "safe" pop compositions. I think Planet Earth was a small step forward after this album. While still very conventional in song structure, he plays a lot with dissonant melodies and missing notes puposefully. This really stands out in Lion of Judah. I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't like 3121. It's just that Prince is one of the only pop artists that I like because he brings something different to the table. I found the repast laid out for the tableaux of 3121 to be somewhat lacking in flavor.

I absolutely love "Lolita." It was the song that made me actually buy the album and start collecting all of his other ones too.

Planet Earth in my Opinion is a big step down from 3121 and Musicology, I Adore Musicology for its more "Organic" and Old School sound and its good that he does Commericial albums like 3121 now and again, its has strong melodies and catchy songs its just ashame he picks shit songs for singles I wish he had picked Love instead of "Amo Carry A Shit" and if u compare Insence and Candles to Mr Goodnight from Planet Earth...need I say more? at least the rap in Insence and Candles is good...Mr Goodnight makes me cringe and he didnt bring anything knew 2 the table for Planet Earth either, Infact he hasnt brought anything new 2 the table for a few years, infact the last time he brought sumthin new 2 the table was TRC and it was new for him cuz it was 100% shit! But that dosent mean his Music (well 85% of it) is less enjoyable [Edited 10/4/08 18:10pm] Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

The 3121 album felt like Prince's last big attempt to prove he can sound as hip and edgy as some of today's artists. I think he both succeeded and failed in that respect. The album is an interesting combination of desperate contrivances and songs with genuine pop sensibilities.
Songs like the title track and Love are full of energy and have catchy hooks. At the same time, the album is littered with tacky appeals to popularity like Incense and Candles and Black Sweat. They come off as Prince trying to convince himself he's in touch with the current generation. All in all, it's a solid album, but I don't think it's the grand return to form Prince was hoping it to come off as. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
