3121

Indigo Nights liner notes. Share your experiences

As i am aware, the new 21 nights book does not have liner notes for the songs performed on the cd. So, with this in mind, i thought it would be interesting to create our own using the recollections of people who were actually there.

I was fortunate enough to be in attencance for the aftershow which comprises the 1st half of the disc.
I'm gonna go with with the first song - 3121

Although 3121 opens the CD. It was actually the second song of the set that night (the first being thankuforletimebemicelf which was largerly played behind the curtain). The indigo was packed and as soon as the curtains opened, there was a huge push forward from the crowd towards the stage. The energy in the room was crazy. Prince was centre stage, Honer in hand. he was wearing Black legging style trousers with his boots over the top of them (kinda like the DM era) and he had a black T-shirt on with the arms roughly cut on them. He also had a black hat on for part of the performance. I couldnt help but think "wow, prince looks kinda scruffy" haha. His make-up was very heavy.. and very obvious form how close i was to him. But he had a youthfullness everytime he smiled.

He began playing some complictaed/discordant funk riff before counting "1 2 3 4" (this is the edit you hear the track begin from on the cd). The band came in and all i remember was the bass and drums rattling my chest and the place going bananas. The entire room began jumping up and down to the beat and pushing forward.. it was one of the best feelings i have ever experienced in my life.

Soon into the song, prince appeared to be having trouble with his guitar. He motioned to one of his sound techs who came on stage. Prince whispered in his ear and made a hand direction to him to the side of the stage. He then gave the gentle man his guitar and he ran off the stage with it. It didnt seem to faze Prince and he just kept it going. I can't help feeling that we missed the oppurtunity to hear a great guitar solo due to the malfunction. The guitar didnt come back out until the last 3rd of the set.

He added verses from DMSR into the track, i dont know if this was a result of losing the guitar but the crowd loved it and everybody was chanting the chorus.

What are your experiences of the songs? I'd love to hear peoples memories from the 2nd part of the cd. A show which i di not attend.

I've only listened to the cd twice, and I enjoy the whole thing. I mentioned on another thread that I thought the piano and the horns stood out the most but there is great bass and drumz as well.

I'll listen to it again today.
