hmmm...

i've listened to this one about 3 times in the last month or so.

there are a few clunkers here, especially Dead On It. and I find Bob George to be irritating and a waste of time all these years later. it was funny a few times, but....

When 2 R In Love doesn't fit. and i'll refrain from taking back my idea for what should replace it.

Cindy C. gives me a headache, but I love it anyway.

Le Grind and Rockhard are my favorites, and 2 Nigs is something else altogether.

it's a mixed bag, really. it doesn't come off as the hodgepodge that it was scraped together as, but I think you just have to be in the mood for it, really.

lol I can dig it. I got my copy on cassette too early in the game (I also still have it) and it had STILL been dubbed over like a muthafucker! BUT to me, that gave it that certain quality, that appeal to it that u KNEW u were listening to some truly unreleased shit! This album is in my top 5 fave P albums, that's for damn sure. I liked it being a boot but I always wished it was officially released in 87/88. Although it was sooooo heavily circulated, it might as well have been an official release. It had so much myth behind it..at that time, it was very potent. The stories behind WHY P recorded it in the first place...Ranging from it was just some jams for him to play at Sheila's birthday party to it was actually a "gift" or an "offering" of some sort...Weird shit. Then the reasons WHY Prince didn't want it released...because if he died, he didn't want that to be the last thing released by him. To that it was evil and he didn't want to give into "Spooky Electric" and the whole 9. It was so strong that P talked about it in the Lovesexy tour book to placing hidden messages in the Alphabet St video. He was feeding the rumors by putting in the video "I'm sorry...don't buy the Black Album". All of that, I thought was cool. To me, this album is his true follow up to his 1999 album. Bob George is one of the most HARDEST tracks ever. This whole album, except for When 2 R In Love, which I can't stand, and oddly, he put that on Lovesexy (?) this album is true Prince. Raw, street, crazy, funky..Like I said, to me, it's 1999 Pt 2.

eek now I want it even more than I already did.

Please, don't let me be an "influence" on you. cool

Oh by the way, the album is fucking awesome! Would just love to hear it remastered.

The Foefur remaster of the black album is what you're after. Finally worthy of listening to.

I just wanted to thank you so very much, cause thanks to you and google I just found some of the best reworked shit I've ever come across. The chaotic masterpiece that is the Black Album sounds better than one would hope on your tip.

I think its an Okay-album, but not really the masterpiece some make it out to be.

I remember being very exciting about the album, when i taped an integral broadcast from the album from the Dutch radio in 1987.
The bad sound-quality and the mysteriousness surrounding (the pull back of) the album, probably made it sound 'better' then it actually was.

In retrospect its a quite uneven album i think:
Le Grind, Cindy C and Superfunkycalifragisexy are top-notch funk/dance tracks, and Bob George is as original as it can come with Prince.
But, Dead on it is plain silly and sounds very dated nowadays. When 2R in love just doesn't fit in with the other songs, Rockhardinafunkyplace is okay, but overrated and 2 Nigs united for west compton shows some nice studio-jamming, nothing more.

6.5/10

But Rainbow Children has the deep, Spooky Electric voice on it. Prince still portrayed darkness & evil init. razz cool

After reading the replies in this thread I think I understand why this album is "overrated". Lots of you got the super sexy sweet goodness of underground bootleggery. It was like being inducted into a special club. A lot of you seem very nostalgic about this album.

I was not one of you. I didn't even know about it at the time. I'm positive that I would have snapped up a boot if I would have known about it. Instead, I'm nostalgic for the Batman soundtrack. I can't even listen to Batman objectively... I have too many positive emotions surrounding it... kinda like watching Star Wars. Go figure.

See, I just got the Black Album... maybe 6 months ago. I'd never heard it before. To me, it sounded very dated. It didn't exactly live up to the hype. I also think it's really over-produced. I'm sure I'd be much happier with the sound quality of a boot.

And I pretty much have to agree with this (sans lapse of time)

On the rare occasions I listen to The Black Album, I always skip Bob George and I've deleted it from my iPod.

Would love to have seen the reaction from fans if he followed through in '87 and released this incognito. No name, no picture.

2NU4WC is pure musical caffeine. I don't think anyone can sit still with headphones on.

This is just a great album.

My first bootleg was also The Black Album.
But I didn't "buy" it -- I traded for it. wink
We made a deal to use only the highest quality cassettes out there,
but even then I could tell it had been dubbed a few times before.

The only part of that song that I "sorta" like is toward the end when he say's "My bed's a coffin, Dracula ain't got shit on me!" and that funky guitar kicks in. Up til then though, blah.

The lead vocal on "Bob George" doesn't sound like Prince - it sounds like Gregory Allen Brooks.

I really do think that the lyrics to 'Dead on it' are among the most brilliant Prince ever wrote.

The Black Album is one of my costant listens of this week, along with '1999' (album) and 'One Nite Alone... Live!'.

Huh?... Prince IS using his OWN voice. He recorded his own voice and then slowed down the speed so the pitch would be lower.. Look at the post right before yours where Danny agreed with me by saying play it at 45, which would speed up the record , therefore speeding up Prince's voice, revealing that it is nobody else voice BUT Prince's.
