I think the album is ok. Not my favorite, but he definitely accomplished what he set out to do....make a party album. Cindy C, 2 Nigs, and When 2 R In Love are my favorites.

For years my crappy boot tape running order was in reverse...started with Bob George and ended with when 2 r in love... I still prefer it that way. call me old but I prefer to end with a ballad. also all the songs were just a bit slower and Bob George/rockhard/cindy .c are all better.

This album is Prince at the peak of his creative recorded output 85-88.
If you don't get it, you're not going to get it.

i like this album. it's fun, silly, confounding, quirky, noisy and funky.

it was more fun before it was officially released by WB. there's something about it being a notorious bootleg that fit the mood of the album.

but i still have memories...

The Black Album >>>>> The Black Album Dis-appreciation.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I remember like it was yesterday, going to the shady record store in Flint, Michigan, going to the counter and saying in a whisper "I hear you have the Black Album", the guy going.. "yup, 10.00" and me giving him the money and waiting while he taped it for me and then.. handing it to me in a brown paper bag, unmarked..

I KID YOU NOT !!!

Its an overrated album for sure. I still think it was more a PR stunt than a real album though. Made for good copy back in the day. Some good tunes on there still.

And amazing that the final, official release sounds so horribly tinny and yet some of the boots I'd bought previously sounded infinitely superior.

Should have stayed a bootleg and retained it's illicitness.

great cover, brilliant idea, love it.

Bob George- one of the greatest Prince songs period.

2 Nigs united 4 West Compton,- love this crazy ass song.

Rock Hard In A Funky Place - badass, greatest album closer ever, (what kinda of fucked up ending is that?) lol, badass all the way to the very end.

I'm sure you already know this, but then that begs a question "why start this pointless thread". The album was completely black so if you picked it up you wouldn't know who the artist was. That's how Prince wanted to release it.

The first line of the first track is "So you found me..." - So when you played it, you would be *surprised* to find it was Prince. Great idea for the fans, shame it didn't get it's original release.

The eventual official release was part of the Warner contract deal.... you know, this really is a pointless thread. neutral

I first heard the album on a bootleg tape, and wasn't told who it was. I actually couldn't figure out it was Prince until Cindy C. Looking back that seems impossible, but I guess it was a new sound in 1987-8.
