Lyrically, the most important album

I think the most important Prince albums are not just the ones with them most innovative and experimental music, but more likely the ones whose lyrics have deep meaning and social references. Even ballads could have a social/political interest.

I'm talking about two albums above the others: Controversy and Sign O' The Times.

Which one does represent its own era?

My vote goes to 'Controversy', due to the Ronald Reagan presidency. It faces also racial matters, which are ever present in today's history, but then they used to be more highlighted.

'Sign O' The Times' could easily be written yesterday, especially the title track. The ballads, such as 'Slow Love' and 'Adore' are a consequence of the state of chaos the world dwells in. It's a reaction. But that reaction was much harder with 'Do me, baby'.

So I think the most 'important' Prince album, the one that, despite sells and other stuff like that, will stand the test of time in its deep analysis of an era, is 'Controversy'.

Something like that can also be found on The Rainbow Children, but that record explains an inner state of the author according to his new beliefs, so it's something esle.

Thoughts on this, if U please.

Thank U.

Honestly, I cannot say that one album is more important over another. Prince has opened his heart and shared it with listeners.

Prince has so much music that makes a spiritual or emotional point to keep you company.

I totally agree with your thoughts on Sign o the Times and Controversy - both laced with some great social comment.

I was listening to Rainbow children last night and as an atheist find the lyrical content difficult to 'swallow'- It is funky as satans socks though !
