i know media has influence - but I listened to Prince as a teen and it didn't wreck my life at all. I think people want to BLAME anything that might allow them to do what they want, and then say "such and such made me do it.". I didn't go running around enacting the latest Prince song! Who did? What exactly does the poster of this thread mean? I wore my hair funky and some goofy 80s clothes. ?So that is corrupted?
From my perspective Prince has nothing to be ashamed of. Other than making people write with u's , 2's and other "cryptic" language. It'd be one thing if he has physically assaulted people or taken over their country and put a dictator in place. With things like that happening around the world I am SHOCKED to see a thread that even bothers with something this arbitrary and inconsequential in the bigger picture. He's one guy, had his place at the "top" for a while, and he still continues to make his music. Good for him, and "so what?" in the larger world picture.

Prince planted plenty of seeds and continues 2 do so, and the seeds of 2day r vastly different from those of 20-30 yrs ago...

Prince or any other artist can't shock people the way he did with his subject matter and the delivery of all that...it's all b done b4. .So 'artists' nowadays go that 1 or 2 steps further... and r alot worse in some cases.

I think the dawn of MTV, and artists such as Madonna, MJ, and Prince opened the flood gates, or PANDORA'S BOX, so 2 speak in terms of 'corruption' and moral decay, and I think it's fair 2 say that all 3 of the above played a part in BASTARDISING CHRISTIANITY @ least throughout the 1980's...and Prince did so in a huge way the Sexy MF...

I'd sure love 2 hear Prince's take on all of this rather than his JW rhetoric of late.

If your talking about using religion inappropriately in song or video, I give that solely to Madonna but then she was a Catholic and she couldn't help herself. There is soooo much symbolism and ritualism in the Catholic religion that she probably felt compelled to express it in her music. I have to say Like A Prayer is one of my fav's of hers.

But back to the topic...Prince did what he did to be different, to be a trendsetter and to make sure nobody forgot his ass in the mix of all the other upcoming artists back then. It Worked!! Yes he tainted many a young mind and opened the door for more risque music and videos but I honestly think it was inevitable. Once you shock people at one level, then you have to up the ante and shock them some more and at some point its overload and they wean themselves off. I kind of think that Prince didn't stop being overtly sexual in his music not because it didn't serve his faith or because he felt the envelope couldn't be further pushed, but perhaps because people yearned for something different and he queued that even before we started reflecting it in record sales.
