I think it's fair 2 say that music and the media in general play a pivotal role in shaping modern society, and Prince has certainly played a large part in that, no? I completely agree. It's actually quite disgusting if you ask me. Sex is so common place, its not taboo anymore. Everywhere you go you can find something that has to do with sex. The internet is the worst place. I can't even go on a specific website without getting some pop up add about viagra or something of the like. I can't even turn on TV without seeing a commercial for male enhancement or a contraceptive pill for women. 10 years ago you would never have seen commercials for those things. You don't think that aids into teens having sex at like 12 or 13 years old? It was bad 10 years ago, but you have to agree its gotten so much worse. And we wonder why so many teens are getting pregnant, STDs are on the rise, adultry and divorce rates are at the highest ever. If you don't think music and tv has any thing to do with that you are delusioned. I mean look at when Madonna came out in the 80s, how many girls ran around dressed up like her? If thats not being an influence on someone's mind I don't know what is. Music has so much power. In this country we put pop stars or rock stars on a pedastool and idolize them. Kinda like ancient Rome with the god and godesses. It's really no different now, its more subtle. I mean, you don't think thousands of screaming girls and guys running after Michael Jackson's limo beating on the windows, fainting, passing out, screaming and crying hysterically isn't some form of idol worship? All I'm saying is that music has that kind of power. See, I think it is crazy that sex is part of what people consider morality. I do not find any immorality with people consentingly engaging is sex for whatever reason. Teens have been getting pregnant for a long time. In the past, pregnant girls would get sent away for a year or simply banished from society. Now, pregnant girls are treated with more respect. To me, that shows how we have increased our morality as a society. Recent pregnancy and STD increases are partially due in part to the lackluster sex education we have in our country. If anyone objects, google sex education in Sweden. Divorce is on the rise for a host of reasons. Divorce is easier to obtain now than it used to be; plus women have more divorce rightss. Along with that, people feel now as if they are freer to make the decision to divorce because it is not as much as a social taboo. To me, increased feelings of freedom are a good thing. Objecting to Prince's style is well within the rights of anybody. What causes troubles for me is when someone's opinion that Prince is corrupting the minds of the youth turns into a society-wide witch hunt. For those of you who are not civil libertarians like myself, you may not know that this is officially "Banned Books Week." So when I hear people talking about how someone is corrupting the moral fiber, I tend to get a bit nervous, that is after I chuckle to myself. Not that anyone here has advocated legal censoring, but in case someone does, let me be the first to say "Get your hands off of my music; get your hands off of my books." reminds me of a pastor's tape on music from back in the 80's
"Prince, the filthy pig, he needs to start cleaning up and stop perverting the mind of the youth of America..." Prince help feed my perversion with "Lady Cab Driver" and helped clean me up with songs like "God".... So, YES he did and NO he didn't !!!

People need to look closely at the message Prince really espoused in most of his '80's songs (including, perhaps, Prince himself). Yes, there was the occasional anomaly with lines like "I'm tempted to rape" (forgive me if that isn't totally accurate), but overall, his message was always one of profound love. Sometimes that love is manifest in a spiritual relationship with a divine other. Sometimes it is in a sexual experience with another person. Nevertheless, Prince's songs always tried to encourage people to imbue love into all aspects of their lives here on Earth and rediscover its redemptive power.
People can focus on the supposed raunchiness of lines like "I came on your wedding gown" all day long if it pleases them. If they do, though, they're missing the crucial bits in those songs that also talk about the joys of pleasing a woman and all other such gifts of a shared humanity. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The reason i love prince is that he's destined to be totally misunderstood, and i can relate to him. "i don't want to hurt you, I only want you to have some fun".

The strange thing 4 me here, is that I have paid attention to this all along...
I loved Prince, in a Donny and Marie, Puppy love for 2 years before I learned about lust....and although Prince's lyrics were sexual, I didn't even cling to the meaning of them because I was so conditioned to love his voice and his music without a sexual side...and then as I became 14 years old or so...and started learning about sexual love....Prince's lyrics were there, but so was a spiritual man that I saw simultaneously...A Godly man I loved was always there, with another man that I wanted to get to know. I could write a book about it...but I burned those diaries. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Must weigh on him pretty heavily considering it was largely deliberate. Pity he can't take it all back..although he tries pretty hard. People do what they want to with their own lives...And My opinions of Prince are sincerely very deep and organized. I can't say on one hand that I am any different loving Prince as a musician and a man than a lot of other girl's, yet on the other hand, My heart is unique unto itself...and my dreams and my lifestyle that had Prince in it all along...I became a person that has made mistakes, although I also became a very spiritual person that has poetry blessings close to the heart of GOD...and I do thank Prince for that inspiration. I have kept my motor clean for the majority of my life, in the lap of lust, so Prince cannot be held responsible for anything, and if he is...Prince can be held responsible for a beautiful Christian relationship that I have, as well as loving music. he corrupted my mind. I was very young when I started listening to him. My mother would always say to me: "I know what he's saying" while waving her finger at me

An artist has responsibility for the image and values he puts out there. That doesn't mean people have to accept them, and they might have those values before. But by having certain values you're advertising those values and there's responsibility in that.
My main point however is that I like Prince's past image with sexually explicit songs. He didn't corrupt, he was a liberator and he shouldn't have gone soft in his older years. One doesn't have to strut around in underwear on stage at 50 but one should continue to uphold liberated values. "Don't hate me cuz I'm sexy" is the way to go. In terms of liberated values, joining The Jehovah's Witnesses was a bad move.
