When I first listened to The Word, it didn't really stand out much. I gave it a second chance when I heard the people here going on about it. When I did, I was blown away.
It's one of those songs that wrote itself. It's one of those songs that shows you how Prince uses his studio as his laboratory. It's one of those songs that you can picture Prince adding every instrument so the vibe is just right. It's all those things and more  had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Great song. I am still a believer that this is a Prince response to Eminem's "Without ME". The one that Eminimen says "Ever since Prince turned himself into a symbol". Listen to the similarities of the two songs. | |

It was the standout track for me on the album. Even though I thought the rest of the album was good, The Word stood out. It seemed different and inventive and got me very excited. I didn't totally love the lyrics, but I appreciated the song and the effort in a way that revitalized my love for Prince and what he can do. | |

I love how atmospheric that song is. I feel like I'm tranported to another world and I love songs like that. I'm glad you gave 3121 a chance nurseV. The Word has definitely grown on me. I always thought it was good, but initially, it got lost among the more uptempo numbers on that album (for me). I love the acoustic guitar - and the lyrics are quite exceptional, religious though they are.
It's very contemplative - somehow, I can see him laying it down around three in the morning. The world is asleep - and he's trying to awaken it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |
