Just re-watched Purple Rain. Amazing how Prince seems so real in this movie.

His feet actually touch the ground. There's a huge amount of theme going on from the spousal abuse to the racism. What an amazing movie... and Prince, well... he plays a part so 'earthed' it's insane. I honestly can't imagine him opening doors now, but pushing play on a tape recorder? Knowing to close the screen before you close the front door? Flicking a light switch? It doesn't seem real anymore.

I caught the last 20-ish minutes of PR the other evening.

mushy

What always strikes me when I watch PR is just how much Prince has changed in the past 20+ years (like we all have rose ). It's like watching a completely different person (who I love and think is unbelievably sexy drool )

There are several eras that seem very "genuine" to me -- i.e., Prince is authentic as "himself".

Standouts would be 1999/Purple Rain, SOTT/TBA, Lovesexy/Nude, and TRC/ONA.

A lot of the other eras seem like playacting or experimenting, such as ATWIAD, Parade, and D&P/Symbol.

Totally... I love street-level Prince. Like, let's expand some of these scenes hypothetically:

"Hey Kid - the boss wants to see you."

"Tell him I'm rehearsing."

"Uh-uh. Now."

"Screw off, Big Chick! You're not the boss o' me!"

*WHACK*

"Alright, I'm comin'..." razz
PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

Damn man.

I loved that movie. Everytime I watch it I get shivers. For 2 hours, I'm in a different, purple world with the raunchiest, kick assiest music in the universe.

Damn man. lol
I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me.
Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots.

Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

Prince really does seem real in Purple Rain. You would have never known he was computer generated.

This is a fun thread...
I think I have thought about this several time since the movie first came out a million years ago...
I love all those little real things already mentioned...but what I love most in terms of PR, is that moment where he is crying after freaking out about his Dad having shot himself and the sheets of music a flying around in there air and he is reaching for them...trying to grab one....tears streaming down....that felt like pretty good acting for an amateur. Very emotional and dramatic, why I love that man.

Sorry disagree some of the worst acting ive ever seen, only the songs are good
Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps U take are no easy road
But the reward is great

1. Wasn't talking about the acting.
2. Racism: Look at the clientele in First Avenue and look at the clientele of Taste.

Don't you? There's nothing explicit, no, but the implied idea of the lives being led is quite succinct. do you think it's merely an oversight that there are few white people in Taste and few non-symbolic black people in First Avenue?

I don't think there's anything there with that.. I was more concerned with how women were treated in the film and @ one point I had issue with Prince about it..

Oh god, yes. The mysogeny is frightening, too. but, honestly. look again. and think where Prince was in his career and whom he was trying to appeal to. There's an issue here too.

Shit, yeah, the mysogeny is magnificent in its bravado. Very, very wrong... and then, you have Wendy and Lisa and how they stand up and how they are strong, etc.... and right... mixed messages indeed.

I know a lot of people don't reckon on Prince's acting in Purple Rain but I thought it was really quite stunning - I thought he did a really good job, my only disappointment was the kissing - he just didn't seem that at it which just defies logic, but hey there you go.

I still think its a great film and is definitely one of my all time favs.

I think he acting was really good but I also think he was pretty "real" there have to be some of the those scenes that may not have "happened" but could easiliy have and I think he was still close to those scene's that "could" have happened and played it really well.

I think for me one of the most poignent scenes is where his dad is playing piana and he turns and asks Prince if he has a girl friend and just says "don't ever get married" - I think that has been quite a prophetic statement - sorry don't like to touch on his private life as it should be that private.

No, not misogynistic (that's more of hating women)... but just the disrespect toward women in the film..... that scene with Jerome dumping that chick in the dumpster and how Jerome treated the waitress... just made me think that they didn't think highly of women..
