From The Vault;
This song was recorded on November 15th 1986 when Prince had completed the Camille album but not yet embarked on assembling the Crystal Ball three-LP. It is a rousing, energetic guitar-based rocker cut from the same cloth as "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". The title phrase is followed by a guitar line which takes the place of a sung chorus (much like many other Prince songs). His guitar tome is piercing and razor sharp. Interestingly, the melody resembles the main riff of George Harrison's 1970 hit "What Is Life?" (from All Thing Must Pass, 1970), which may or may not be the reason why Prince chose to withhold the song when he compiled Crystal Ball. The song concerns a "cosmic dream". Prince's vocals are speeded-up and higher than his Camille voice, which unfortunately reduces the impact of the song somewhat. Still, the song ranks as one of the most inspired all-out rockers that Prince has chosen not to release. Listen to George Harrison’s “What Is Life?” to compare the guitar groove. http://www.youtube.com/wa...2oFESUMWhU To me, this sounds like a song he recorded for a woman, could it be Madonna? Or maybe she based her and Patrick Leonard’s 1987 song “Dear Jessie” on this track; there are some lyrical similarities. We know they worked on stuff together, notably they bounced song ideas to and fro, so maybe this was part of that. Prince’s voice is speeded-up to sound more feminine, not down-right Camille funky and the layered backing vocals somehow sound as if he had Madonna in mind when laying this track down. He also refers to a ‘merman’, not a ‘mermaid’. Also remember Susannah Melvoin was part of Madonna’s “Ray Of Light” album that featured a song called “Mer Girl”. But maybe I am reading stuff into that. Fun stuff that the tick-tock beat that opens the song reminds me of beat of The Family’s Desire and the second beat sounds like The Line, before yet another drum and that George Harrison guitar lick leads the way to a head bopping song. I wonder how this got out. This is just a snippet and to me it feels like a bootlegger sat on this track a long time, maybe just releasing a snippet so they can put it out another time, but now extended, this way pumping fans some more later on. I can feel a three cd set with old stuff coming on, with this song as bird of prey. Caught between greedy bootleggers and an unwilling Prince, the fans are slave to their addiction. It’s of course easy to say “If I was Prince I would…” but the man is of course ripped again. Even ten years after he vaulted up Paisley Park and outtakes, things manage to slip out. But I am still happy some simple head boppers like Splash and this snippet find their way out of there. It shows that indeed, Prince is still his own biggest competitors and I feel he likes to keep it that way, somehow never understanding how deep our dedication/addiction to his music goes. But he is allowed, I grudgingly admit. [Edited 9/27/08 4:57am]

Including Traffic Jam, Everybody wont what they don't got and others, check House quake for the full story. I think this theroy could well be true. I've seen the lyrics quoted years ago but it's only the ones that appear in the snippet. So has anyone ever heard the ful track?

It's interesting, for sure. It kinda reminds me of a song by theaudience - I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough).
Very poppy, very female.

It does sound like something that he not only wrote for a woman but something he did for Madonna. The title, the melody, the lyrics, everything. Don't forget obviously Madonna was in Prince's blood since he wanted her intially for his love interst role not only for GB but also for UTCM which originally was to be a film titled "Prince of Darkness and the Morning Star". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I didn't know that the fans got to vote on what songs they wanted to hear on Prince's next compilation CD. But I didn't make it to the celebration that year, so that's probably why I wasn't aware of it. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

It's hilarious, definately in the running for Prince's goofiest moment ever. The pulsing chug of the beat brings to mind 'Romance 1600' the most, and the vocals are way higher and softer than Camille. ... [Edited 9/30/08 12:18pm] Straight Jacket Funk Affair
