Under The Cherry Moon... a must see movie! (From a first-timer) Hey guys, I know we've had a number of UTCM threads recently but I've just watched this movie for the first time and had to add my penny into the well.
In short, the movie is great, IMO! I really was preparing myself to lower my standards and force myself to enjoy it, but I needn't have bothered! Prince is at his screen best as he injects a lot more humour and life into his character than in his other films. The two-man act of Prince and Jerome works really well and their friendship adds a warmth to the film. There are tonnes of funny moments and the dialogue is frequently humorous too. However, I primarily watched this movie as a Prince fan and not as an objective movie critic. For a fan of Prince, this film is enjoyable for its contribution to our understanding of Prince. The movie might not seem particularly special to a non-fan but to me it is both interesting and enjoyable, though I should add that the film, whilst both of the above is by no means a stunner - just a pleasant surprise. IMO this is Prince's best film. It looks the least dated out of Purple Rain, UTCM and GB. It's by far the funniest and does at least a fair job of paying a respectable homage to ye olde films, giving it a "cosy Saturday afternoon curl up on the sofa" feel. I definately recommend tracking it down if you've not already seen it!

Yeah, eye agree, the directing is great, & eye never understood y the critics felt the need 2 destroy dis movie, which is far better than Purple Rain. Of course, UTCM is romentic & can b considered a bit naive but, hey, can't people understand love from time 2 time...?
Have u seen grafitti bridge ? What do u think ?

Have u seen grafitti bridge ? What do u think ? To be honest, there's lots I love about GB too. The colours and overall visual tone of the movie is pretty impressive. However, the storyline is confusing and crap. I think it largely obscures much there is good about the movie. The end part of the film happens at such a pace that it destroys the flow of the movie. The best bits about GB, ie the humour, is abundant much more in UTCM. Moreover, Prince is far more interesting in UTCM. Although GB aint bad I think it's the worst of the three big movies he's released, although it's still relatively enjoyable, interesting and indespensable as a piece of Prince history.

I have always thought 'Graffiti Bridge' would have really worked as the Broadway musical it was originally intended to be in the first place, as opposed to the stillborn movie that put the kibosh on Prince's ambitions as a matinee idol for good. There really is very little to recommend 'Graffiti Bridge'as a film: seen in the cold light of day, the "story"(an unholy mish-mash of three v. different drafts shoddily re-written in a hurry) was disjointed, the dialogue was an embarrassment, the sets were cheap and creaky and made "Crossroads" look like "Dallas", the lighting was diabolical, the denouement was incomprehensible, the cast was desperately out of their depths as thespians, in fact the whole enterprise sucked big time! 'Under The Cherry Moon', on the other hand, has stood the test of time quite well. I showed it to guests I had over for dinner recently and, to my surprise, they all thought it was a bit of a riot. Go figure. . "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."
