Help! Sign O' The Times or Around the World.... I need to get some new (old) Prince on and i'm debating on which one to get first. Please give me your opinions i'm all ears. Keep in mind that my fave Prince album is Controversy, I love synths and 80's music in general. Which one would me more up my alley? Or is it a different album by Prince altogther?? I already have, Dirty Mind, Purple Rain and Come.
Cheers! | |

I love ATWIAD, but there's no comparison. Sign 'o' The Times smokes it.
The problem is that they are so vastly different that you might as well try and get both.

Also, SOTT is not an album that grabbed me right away. I liked it just enough to play it again (which more or less I was prone to do since I was a devout Prince fan back in the day). It's one of those albums you like more and more upon repeat listening.

The same thing happened to me when my Mom got me SOTT back in 87. I didn't "get" it till I was 19, 11 years later As for the question, go with SOTT, then get ATWIAD. Have fun! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Sign 'O' the Times takes a while to start getting into, I agree. It's like a new pair of underwear, at first it's constricting, but after a while it becomes a part of you.

Personally, my first Prince album was SOTT. After repeat listening, I had to have more.
The first disc I found really accessible. SOTT, Play in the Sunshine, Housequake, Ballad of D. Parker....all great cuts. I think what I liked about that album is that it sounds like a genius at play in his own home-cooking studio. Lots of drum machine, lots of raw performances.

u can't go wrong either way!
i'd suggest atwiad. lovely album & seems old school compared 2 sott. i dunno, sott in league of it's own. i'm not suggesting it's better or i prefer it, but it's very different 2 anything else he'd done up 2 tht point. it's very cool & very nice pile of songs...better brace yourself!

I just wanted another Purple Rain or 1999. But you can definately tell if it's going to be a classic album if upon repeat listenings, it keeps getting better and better. None of his newer albums do that to me. They mostly start off sounding snappy, then I shelve them. Now, years and years later, I can still listen to SOTT skipping on "Slow Love" and sometimes "It's gonna b a beautiful night" (hey, I'm tired of those songs, k? )

Sign O' The Times is a very complex album, it grows on U through the years and in the end, U cannot stop listening to it.
Around the world in a day is a much easier listen, so my advice is, go for it first.

This is the easiest question yet....Sign o the Times. It is a classic inside and outside of Prince circles for many reasons.. Plus, you will get more music. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

sott all the way man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Housequake, Starfish and Coffee, Adore, Play In The Sunshine, If I Was Your Girlfriend, The Cross are all feautured on SOTT and for just one of those songs alone (especially Adore) its well worth buying! ATWIAD is also a brilliant body of work...but its a grower and u need to listen to it a few times before u like it, As in with SOTT, I loved it on its first whirl [Edited 9/26/08 11:00am] Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

Im Sorry but i totally disagree there ATWIAD isnt at all very commercial sounding or as easy on the ears as SOTT and ATWIAD was the 4th album i brought 3 years ago when i was a new fan and u know from the title track its kinda psychdelic (an on first listen plain fuckin weird) and even ATWIAD is now one of my fave albums now(as i mentioned above its a grower) it dosent have enough catchy tunes that grab u on first listen (apart from raspberry beret and pop life) infact even tho SOTT is longer, i certainley dont think its harder to listen threw even tho it may be more complex (cuz of diffrent styles etc), infact for Starfish and Coffe and Adore alone SOTT is worth buyin over AWTIAD [Edited 9/26/08 11:16am] Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

At my first listen to 'Around the world in a day' back in 1993, every song caught me except 'Condition of the heart' and 'Temptation'.
