How has Prince as a musician influenced you? I know there are a lot of musicians on this site and would like to know how they feel Prince's talent has influenced their work / career.
I know musicians hear music differently than the average person. Growing up in India I was always mesmerized by live bands playing Western music (RnB / Rock) at Christian weddings. I am not a musician, I am in a totally different career field but I love music (I have never studied it and don't play any instruments perfectly). I play very little piano.

Prince's influence on me not only as a musician but also as a songwriter, producer and performer. Prince's influence on me as a musician was VERY natural. Very second skin. One reason was because he and I like many of the same people. And I think for very similar reasons. So right from the get go, or at least from his second album, I KNEW where P was coming from. Even when I was very young really since I was 8, I was listening to everything. From Hendrix to Parliament-Funkadelic to Zeppelin to The Beatles, to KISS to Donna Summer to Bowie and so on. It didn't matter of the genre, if I liked it, I liked it. Growing up with both my parents being musicians, it was naturally in my blood. So I started playing instruments early. But by the time I started writing songs and recording them when I was in high school, Prince was a MAJOR influence on me to want to play everything myself in the studio. No doubt about that. He's influemced me to experiement in the studio, to blend genres in one song. I learned that from Funkadelic as well but Prince's impact was deep. Overall. To be as expressive as I can on each instrument, to shine, to flash, to excell. Again, I have picked up different things from different musicians as well, but Prince, he's like my first cousin. Again, his influence was VERY natural. I just KNEW what P was doing, WHY he was doing it, etc. He just reinforced what was already inside me naturally as a musician. [Edited 9/3/08 0:30am] A good example of how P influenced me as a musician is his musicianship on the cut Lady Cab Driver. Especially during the sections where there are no vocals. His playing on everything on that is so sharp and so "on point" but at the same time, it's so "one take-ish", so raw yet so polished. Same thing on "God" Love Theme From Purple Rain" , his playing on that is brilliant. Not just on the guitar but on everything else as well. That level of musicianship, just a small example of how he has influenced me as a musician. That's what I meant earlier when I stated to shine, to flash, to excell. On everything. [Edited 9/3/08 0:30am] I totally believe that. I think if I had pursued music as a career I would find Prince to be a very strong influence on me as well. I think just his dedication to his work is inspiring. I find his style of combining different genres of music to be unique. His musical genius is exhilirating and uplifting. It is like looking through a music catalog. Before being drawn to Prince... I have listened to different genres of music (different artist and also in different languages). I have no one to compare him to. Lyrics, composition, instrument playing, singing... etc... Unbelievable.

I agree and it is with so many of his songs. Especially his first couple of albums he was still very young and very gifted.

I started becoming a musician at a younger age directly because of Prince. He has influenced me to learn different instruments and compose, and play from the heart.

Prince has taught me that music, like film, is not a democracy. Collaboration is fine, but at the end of the day, somebody's gotta be driving the bus. And if you have a vision, you need to fight for it. Like (my other hero) Ridley Scott said, "nobody respects you later, for having been a nice guy and given up. You have to get it, because you're gonna wear what you've got."

Must NOT be many actual musicians in this forum....Granted, I know this isn't a thread asking "Do You Love Prince?" or "Would You Die For Prince?". [Edited 9/17/08 13:28pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I learned to pay attention to the silence between notes, to the minimalist arrangements. To pay more attention to rythm guitar and to love all music genres and borrow from them.

As BG said to try to be "on point" with everything you play no matter whether you're at rehearsal or a gig. And to practice constantly.
Prince once he said liked to record the parts himself because he played with a certain "intent" whereas another guy doing the part might be in a different mindset. If I remember right Prince said something like "I could have an orgasm on my mind and the bass player could be thinking about pickles." For those who have the actual quote please post it. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page
