U2 song - Prince rip? I actually think that it's just a tonic resemblance but I heard this song for the 1st time on the radio yesterday and the first few lines reminded me strongly of When Doves Cry.
I actually like the song unil it gets bombastic towards the end - and I'm not a big U2 fan, tho I like some of their stuff. Anyway, can any1 else hear what I'm talking about, or is it just me? [Edited 9/17/08 3:49am] "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

I see what you mean though it did take me a bit of time to feel what you feel. It´s just the very first second of each line, and maybe not even that much, and the feeling of "deja vu" quickly fades as soon as Bono continues his lines. So, apart from the very first second(s), the following lines don´t bear a tonic resemblance at all.
A much more obvious influence is that old U2 song where Prince seemed to have borrowed a bit for his song "Guitar" . Check out U2´s " I will follow" video on youtube and you will see what I mean. THAT sound much more like a rip off. Another example would be Marc Bolan´s or T-Rex´s song that sounds heavily like Prince´s song "Cream"...don´t remember the title, something like Bang Sha Bong or whatever....other orgers probably could give you the title of that song. And I´m still trying to figure out whether Prince ripped off of Laid Back´s "White Horse" when he wrote "Erotic City", or whether Laid Back had already heard "Erotic City" first ( as a promo release ?) and then wrote "White Horse". I heard that there is a very rare maxisingle with Prince on the A-side and Laid Back on the B-side,and I know that they had briefly met in the early 80s and hung out a bit but other than that, I can only speculate. I always found similarities of guitar parts in U2- Stay Faraway so close(acoustic version) to the guitar part in Sometimes it Snows in April. Whenever I play Sometimes it Snow in April in my guitar, I always have the urge to sing "Stay".

Yeah, I know all those - and I don't think it's a rip, I just used that in the title to be provocative. It's more of a sonic resmblance. But if you're making a list you should include Endorphinemachine=Smoke on the Water ANd of course there's the Do Me Baby and Kiss controversies... As I said, this was more of a strong association than a lift. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

i love the song and the video. that's a different version than what's on the album. and no i dont see it as a rip from any Prince song. it's just the way the song was written and performed.

I dont see it as a rip, but the melody is very similar in the first seconds. But then it goes in another direction.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying - of course it's not a rip. That was just me being provocative. i just wanted to chekc if anyone else heard that similarity. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

Yep, and I'm far from the only one. That guitar riff is similar although I don't think it's a rip-off. I find when I've got one in my head I often can't remember the other and vice versa. [Edited 9/17/08 14:48pm] "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
