To a certain degree, yes. But compared to many other artists I think he's managed to sustain high quality better than most.

My thoughts:

We are used to Prince. After 30 years, we are no longer shocked. We simply expect his genius, we even complain and bitch about it. Just like we take the stars and the sun for granted, we take Prince for granted.

So, Prince is still turning out high quality music, it's just that it hits you differently now (at your age) than it did in 198whatever.

I suspect that if a brand new artist had just put out Planet Earth people would herald their genius unendingly. However, with Prince--we simply think, "Yep, that's Prince for you."

Prince was past his prime after Sign O.T.T. Anything after that was repetition in a way (not that there is no joy in repetition).

Yeah, he is but there's nothing wrong with that.

Every artist from Prince's era are past their prime!!!

Most artists' Prime are from 25-30. It comes with aging.

Michael Jordan's past his prime, but that doesn't mean he's not the greatest to ever play his sport!!!

Had some doubt about that but although Lovesexy was brilliant, I consider it his first step down.

what does "Prime" mean? commercial? or creative?

I think Prince has grown into an adult just fine, I think he's still "Mo Funky" than 99% of the 50 year olds in the world..

I think his albums are still high quality, the live show hasn't gone down hill and he still knows how to keep us all coming to this site looking for the latest news and tidbits..

in terms of commercial appeal, maybe he's past his prime but in terms of still being relevent.. nope..

To me: creative.
At his peak Prince was pure geniality. No one could touch him.
Yes, his shows are still fantastic but not as mindblowing as they used to be.
He will always be a genius for the albums he has made in the '80-s but would you still consider him a genius if his first albus was Planet Earth (or 3121 or Musicology)? In other words if there were no Dirt Mind, 1999, PR, ATWIAD etc.

And as fas as relevance goes... well, again imo he's relevant for what he has done not for what he is doing right now...

(But I keep hoping smile )

No. In fact, he's become more proficient in the art of music, production, entertainment, etc., that has only improved his work. One has to be open to listening in the present and making their determination based on what is before them at that moment. It is true that at such a young age he was gifted with talent beyond compare but even then, one takes those gifts and builds upon them which is what he appears to have done.

Prince just isn't 1985 Prince, which was a Prime foundation for the maturing wisdom of an artist that is a man with his Prime fuel still within him.

Prince doesn't sound as if he's matured at all as a musician, though. If you listen to his 1984-1987 work, released and unreleased, he seems a more mature artist then than he is now. But that will happen when you release songs like "Mr. Goodnight" when you're 50 years old. The younger Prince would b*tch slap the old Prince. He through it all away after when he got rid of Wendy & Lisa, Susan Rogers, wasn't allowed to release the 3 LP Crystal Ball, and started hanging with that Ingrid chick. Plus you have to consider that during Prince's best period, 1984-1987, he wrote so much music but could only release one album per year. Thus, all that great music got shelved. Unfortunately Prince will never release those songs as they were originally designed. He won't share his genius with future generations. They'll sit there in the vault. Art is not art until it's interpreted. Susan Rogers said that!

Of course not, nobody should compare Prince to other artists , because he's unlike any artist out there.
