man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

oooh that Oprah interview. cripes. they're baby was about dead when they did the spot. and i swear he was prompting Mayte b/c every time Oprah asked her a question, you see Prince stroking Mayte's hair. he has this intense look at Oprah too like he's studying her and trying to figure out the question before she asks. prince is intuitive i will give him that. but man the whole thing just didn't seem comfortable and appropriate, i dunno why on earth they wanted to do it. he could have talked about the music and left the family out of it.

yeah disturbing. That's one thing that says to me that the marriage broke up not because Prince can't commit, but because they had a pretty big tragedy--and in the spotlight. That could destroy any relationship. Prince tried to go on promoting his magnum opus that centered around his new love & family, as if all was well. This, after he pulled the damn Black Album!

nod I really believe that if the baby was born healthy... Prince and Mayte would have gone a lot longer... Mani would not have had a chance. My impression, but he seemed more into Mayte, more excited and a little in awe of her and the love they shared. It was just the time in his life that he was ready to settle and be domestic. Then tragedy struck and now Mayte was a reminder of what he lost... he turned away instead of dealing with the situation. Mani, seemed to me was like a solace to him, he was wounded and she was easy, and totally nuturing and devoted. It was what he needed at that time.

If tragedy had not struck, I don't think there would have been JW, and that was another problem with him and Mayte. Mani knew this was a wedge and made her move.

Disclaimer: I don't know any inside information... just human nature and calling it the way I see it.

Everything happens for a reason. The tragedy, the divorce and affair, the conversion.

I was under the impression that this whole CD was written before the actual divorce. Look at other songs on this CD, Man o War, I love you but don't trust you anymore. This CD has been nicknamed the "break up CD". So I think it is fair that people think this song is about Mayte given the lyrics, and the video..

There are scenes that Prince and the video actress are dressed JUST like he and Mayte in that magazine spread. If I knew how to post video stills I would do so for comparison. And the woman's belly grows big like she is pregnant... I could go on and on about similarities between the video and song and real life.

I really love this video, the video makes the song so much better.

Him and Mayte would have ended up having a bunch of kids, he wanted that he said. My thought is that its the way the child was afflicted. A miscarriage or stillborn would have been painful but that particular event was devastating it seems - not something you can really get past. If it weren't Mani it woulda been some other chick moving in on that situation - not any ole random skank mind you, but another young seemingly naive pretty someone promising devotion.
Alas, he may not be the faithful kind but he sure is a hopeless romantic IMHO.

I wonder if he was maybe making a new attempt at saving his marriage, realizing that perhaps it had been tainted by his selling of it in the past.

They were already broke up by then he just didn't want people to know. She was in Spain then to Miami, there was a misunderstanding about it in the LK interview.

yeah,
I get the impression Prince's turnaround time for music written to released is usually around 6 - 8 months.

I think he wrote that whole album around the time he was contemplating breaking up. By the time we hear these songs, the decision has been made, and the move executed.

I wonder if the women know they are on the "out program" while it is developing, or when they see the lyrics of their break up song in black and white. eek

There are times I think the man has no emotion at all, just wants us to think he does. Just tell people what they want to hear and they are happy.
