I always it was about women who try to get close to him for reasons other than himself.

I've always wondered if Delores was meant to be Prince himself and the song is sung from the point of view of Warner's and maybe even his fans.
The early references to being like a brontosaurus 'packing it in' and 'eating all but the tip' makes me think of Prince's insistence to release what WB saw as too much music. (And weren't brontosaurus' vegetarians?) 'Showing dirty movies, like some kind of whore' - They must have let him known at some point just how bad Graffiti Bridge was. 'Her bell's just a-broken since 1984' - Never going to repeat the Purple Rain success. 'Dancin' like a white girl on disco dirty floors' - Wasn't there the odd criticism in the 80s that Prince was making 'white' pop music rather than sticking with his supposed roots? 'Damn, Delores, pick another subject please. Introduce the carpet 2 something other than your knees' - The whole Slave thing and the 'aren't WB awful' attitude that I know I was getting bored of by 1996. He really was starting to sound a little pathetic at times, maybe Prince finally realised just how he was sounding. From Emancipation onwards, we saw a much more positive Prince. 'Dinner with Delores. No more, that's the end' - They're not going to be 'dining' with him again, although this lyric could work both ways. To me, the song sounds like it was Prince realising that bitterness and complaining wasn't creating a positive vibe and I've always felt that it sounded like an apology and he was finally seeing the situation from their side. Like a positive kiss-off to counterbalance the more negative 'Had U'. But hey, it's easy to interpret stuff any way you like if you want to.

one of my faves, i think it's inclusion on chaos and disorder answers your question, as it was a "f-you" album [Edited 8/28/08 13:22pm] Like a Gb Major with a E in the bass

Maybe Delores is a stage name for the girl that thinks that she can get into Prince's heart by giving him a bj...which any girl knows how to do. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Yes, it was basically about WB. Though I think it works on several levels, so
it can be read as Delores as WB, but it also has meaning with Prince as Delores too. I'm sure Prince intended both interpretations.

Dolores, depending on the pronunciation, also means "dollars" in spanish.
Wasn't he with Mayte during this time? She must have taught him some spanish. Very interesting theory...never thought about this song being about WB. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Dinner with Delores
Must be some kind of sin Like a Brontosaurus She was packin' it in The first night we dined And by the next time This girl was eatin' all but the tip And by the stroke of midnight She wanted some more (more) Showin' dirty movies Like some kind of whore But she was wastin' her time 'Cause there wasn't a line That would make me come 'round her door Dinner with Delores Must be some kind of sin Her bell's just a-broken (bell's just broken) Since 1984 (Dancin') Dancin' like a white girl (white girl) On disco dirty floors Damn, Delores, pick another subject please Introduce the carpet 2 something other than your knees Like a real confession No one could be more made up than u Nothin's left 4 guessin' What a shame Boo hoo I'd call u a friend But it must be a sin And I've run out of cheeks 2 turn Dinner with Delores No more That's the end

Why do you people try to read so much into Price's music? Everytime that man does something somebody's gotta start a 'what did he really mean', who was he really talking about? thread??

I've heard that the song "Dinner With Dolores" was about Warner Brothers as well. Not sure if that is fact or fiction, though. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The greedy record company forcing him to churn out the same tired themes from 1984. Brilliant song and great lyrics.

Brilliant song and great lyrics. I remember reading somewhere that is was about Vanity (Denise Matthews). The name makes sense and so do many of the lyrics. The rip on her as easy/trashy. Dancing like a white girl on disco dirty floors- if you've seen some old vanity videos- self evident. I'd call you a friend- but I've run out of cheeks to turn. This would be an obvious reference to Vanity's turn to religion and when she initially called him a sinner and was talking about him in the press. But who knows- it aint like prince is telling us.

[sarcasm]1985, Prince released the perverse ATWIAD only 9 months after PR. Ooh, they really had it in for him didn't they? Fancy letting him pretty much get his way releasing an album so soon after such a major hit record and having it sound so deliciously odd compared to what the masses would have expected. 1986. Yep, that tired old sound of Parade. 1987. It was getting silly now - Sign O The Times was the same, boring old stuff we'd been getting for the past four years. And this time there were two discs of it And fancy Prince, and Prince alone stopping the release of The Black Album and WB letting him. They were so cruel! 1988. And as for the incredibly safe and commercial sounding Lovesexy. Yeah, same old same old... Thank God they forced him to make a safe cover for it. Oh wait... 1989. Ah, now here there's maybe a point. But hey, giving him the soundtrack to the hottest movie of the time. How awful of them. 1990. And yes, they were even selfish enough to allow Prince free-reign to make one of the most self-indulgent pieces of shite that is the GB movie. Good sountrack though. 1991. And fancy spending so much money on promoting the 'same tired themes' with the actually really fresh sounding at the time D&P album. They sure were cruel, spending money taking him back to another commercial peak.[/sarcasm] 1992. Possibly here is where the genuine problems came in and where the grievances actually start. One of the reasons that people thought the 'Slave' thing was pathetic was because Warner's had actually been extremely generous to Prince from the very start of his career and the relationship only seemed to deteriorate as the 90s kicked in. And even then, there have been hints (The BBC's 'Prince's Millions' programme) that have suggested that the so-called battle was a bit of a put-on.

I agree, somewhat.Every song can't possibly be about someone that he personally knows Or about a situation that he is going through. On another thread, folks are saying that "I Hate U" is about Carmen Elektra.Unless he told us that, how can we possibly know that?

Actually....
Delores is real and one incredible woman. I call her Dee and she's one of my best friends.. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and that's all I have permission to mention... For those of you who know me or know of me, you know that my reputation is solid and real and that's all I have to say about that... *insert flames here--I don't care* jshua

that's all I have permission to mention Oh stop it.Forget about all this "permission" stuff.Just tell us the details, please For those of you who know me or know of me, you
know that my reputation is solid and real and that's all I have to say about that *insert flames here--I don't care*
Flames? No flames necessary. This is Prince.org...we're a cool bunch jshua[/quote]

The song is actually a play on words for someone who is real but it's not an actual accounting of who she is...
The hint in its fallacy is in the lyric: "like a real confession, no one could be more made up than you..." and yeah, I do need permission because of this surrealistic life I've just recently stepped into.... It's all good and sorry to sound so cryptic but I hope that answered your question (in part, anyways)... Like I had previously mentioned, some people know me or know of me around these parts and I have no reason to make any of this up... Truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction... jshua [Edited 9/3/08 7:05am]
