Quit hatin' on NewPower Soul

If you give it a spin, you'll find several great tracks! People forget that "The One" is even one there. And what about "Wasted Kisses" ?! Freaks on this side?

GEEZ!!!

Like, it's my job to defend NPS through the ages...
Fear is the mind-killer.

I don't consider it a real Prince album anymore and that
made it a bit easier to listen to.

It's a fun album if you don't take it seriously and just
take it as a bunch of goofy funky songs.

Mad Sex, Come On, The One, Wasted Kisses. Those are good
songs. The rest is b-sides looking for album fame.

Agree! But those songs you mentioned are good. No one can tell me otherwise.

It's NOT a Prince album.
It's an NPG album.

It's the follow up to 'Exodus' not 'Emancipation'.

It's actually quite a good fun album
when you put it into it's proper context
instead of hating it for something it isn't.

Ah this NPG work is very loose...

You're right it is the kissing cousin of Exodus.

They mention "the good life" in the first song.

It doesn't matter if its the follow up to Adventures with Teletubbies, Emancipation or Exodus whether its supposed to be "fun" , "serious" or whatever.
Its just plain shit.

It's got fucking Prince on the cover, Prince everywhere infuckingside, Prince singing on every fucking track...but

It's an NPG album, if only for my Princely pride.

It's crap.

But I like The One.

New Power Soul has a few good tracks, like The One or Wasted Kisses, and but overall it is very weak. They deserved to be on a stronger release.

Take "Freaks on this side" ... where would it live if not on NPS? Or am I the only person who thinks this song is cool?

I think Freaks on this Side is an unusual song. It has a dark edge and is somehow different. Worth a listen every now and then.

WHY does "Newpower Soul" EVEN EXIST?!?!

WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!!?

In his "commentary" he takes a dig at the SYMBOL album-I would LOVE to hear WHY NPS was EVER put out! Funny he's SILENT on this issue when discussing the freedom to release the music he wants.

1) Was it to call attention to Chaka Khan+ Larry Graham's NPG cd's of the same time?

2) Did he just want to make some quick $$$?

3) Was he totally BURNED OUT and couldn't tell the difference? Does he think EVERYTHING he does is brilliant?

4)Did he just want to put the "Crystal Ball" disaster behind him with new product?

How can he really see that release independant of an OFFICIAL PRINCE album, appearing on the "Tonight Show" singing "Come On", sticking he airbrushed face on the cover, multiple photos and placements of that tired symbol throughout, and expect the public to take it anyother way than a Prince cd?

Anyone who defends NPS needs to expand their "musical pallette" and listen to more music than Prince to appreciate earnest, sweaty efforts and creativity. NPS is a product by an egotistical artist who thinks his s--t doesn't stink-but NPS clearly does.

cheers

dag...i wouldn't go all that far...but the album is pretty bad. Perhaps not by the standards of radio play but certainly by Prince's own standards...i think this is just another example of Prince trying to prove he can do what everybody else is doing, but better...this time though, he fell on his face a bit. that's alright though cuz you gotta make a few mistakes in order to learn anything new.

It should have been a 3 track single

Come On
The One
Wasted Kisses

The rest sucks, i don't quite get why people rate Mad Sex, it's just plain dull and no melody at all.

Sorry T.

I agree!

MAD SEX is a horrible track! LISTEN to that VOCAL! nno imagnitive musicianship.

I have a hunch it's popularity has EVERYTHING to do with "sex"!

If the song was "Mad Tex ( the story of a cowboy)" I doubt it would be popular.

So, enlighten me, would saying something like "NewPowerSoul is the crappiest album Prince ever had the gall to release, and I hate him for destroying what used to be my beloved email address by using the term NewPowerSoul to title the worst album ever in the history of the universe" constitute hatin' on it?

I think people judge a prince album in different ways. There are those who listen to an album with the attitude that it is a collection of songs, regardless of who created them. Then there are those who realize that every album he puts out is a statement of where he is in his life in a musical perspective. The man who released NPS is the SAME man who released SOTT, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, and The Rainbow Children. I think that a lot of people should be glad that he hasn't reproduced the same sound year after year after year; album after album.

I don't care what you have to say, NPS is a Prince original! It all came from the same genius, no matter what the cover says. Think about this, if you will. What if Prince decided, at the last minute, to not release the songs on NPS? What if they were just sitting in the vault? I don't know about you, but I'm glad he chose the alternative. He obviously decided that NPS would be his next statement in music, and I'm glad he did, no matter how good or bad anyone else thinks of it. I would rather he be honest, and put out the music that he wants to put out.

I don't think it's his best album...it's far from it...but I'm glad that I could buy it and listen to it for a while, if only to get an idea of where he was at the moment in his career.

I get the feeling that there are a lot of people out there who, for years now, have expected the next Prince album to be the best one yet. They have a lot of faith in him as a musician, and they know that he's the shit, therefore, they keep thinking that he's going to outdo himself every time he puts out a new release. When the new release doesn't compare to their favorite album at the time, then it's a piece of crap in their eyes! I hate that!

There is a lot of recorded Prince music, released or not. I like to think of the material that he releases once or twice a year as the music that he stands behind and says, "Here. This is what I want to release at this time" I would rather he keep doing this, than to try and outdo himself each year and end up falling on his ass.

You can try to argue with me, but it's no use...I'm right!

Why do you agree? (no one can tell you otherwise. Then don't agree with it not being a real Prince Album. then who's album is it? I dig NPS. Had a great time driving to Atlanta, this album made the trip with 11 Brats worth while.
I never even noticed the yelling and fighting in the back of the van. All I heard was Music to my ears. Great Album.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

How can U "hate" music ? Take an apsrin y'all.

NPS sounds pretty funky to me..

Prince wasn't trying to move the earth with this release.

It was just a fresh new groove, toss it on the pile..

Move on to the next experience.. music

But looking back at the pile, yeah it may not be one of the more memorably lyrical packs or "weak" as u say, but its a funky gem that shines. Still listen to it today.

ONA? listened to it once. Fell asleep. Makes a nice coaster. Maybe when i'm older and my legs don't dance anymore i'll appreciate it more.

You're not the only one I like this song. The voice thing reminds of "The Exodus has begun"... the albu m is a light funk effort just made to entertain, period.

I like it, some songs on it are great. I think of it as a "morning-just-after-you-wake effort" but some songs on it are cool.

It's low key but funky...

I'm not defending NPS as such
(I'm not overly keen on it myself)

I'm just saying you should be
judging it with 'Goldnigga' &
'Exodus', not Prince's back
catalogue.

It's like saying "Madhouse 8
is crap, Prince doesn't sing
on any of the songs, and they're
all too long and jazzy. Where
are the hit singles? It's not
as good as Sign O' The Times"
