Producer Teddy Riley inspired by Prince's Alphabet An old friend of mine was telling me his theory that Prince's Alphabet Street started Teddy Riley's New Jack Swing period! Anyone else out there in P Universe thinks this way too?

Could you be a little more direct? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

No.. Teddy was on his own roll and it started way before Alphabet street.. a whole bunch of album's Teddy did dropped in the summer of 87' (and 86) .. Johnny Kemp's 'Just Got Paid', Keith Sweat's 'I Want Her', his own group Guy, Heavy D's 'Do Me Right', Bobby Brown's album dropped the same year as Prince's, .. so no.. Teddy may have liked Prince, but Alphabet street did not start the New Jack Swing movement... [Edited 8/30/08 13:11pm]

I think alphabet street sounds like something that inspired the neptunes big time. And we all do know that pharell worked with teddy riley in the beginning, so I can see the connection.

Ditto on No...
Make It Last Forever, Keith Sweat's debut, came out in 87...and that was the first introduction of New Jack Swing...Which was before "Alphabet Street" Teddy was his own man...

Man...that CD brought back some memories...."Whose beeper just beep?" Prime aka The Kid

Actually it was "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Guy" but a lot of the songs from the Future were on there. The one song that wasn't on there was my jam "Yearning for your love". I love Guy and that's certainly a good rendition, but nothing beats the original. I'm not a fan of that compilation. Groove Me: The Best of Guy is a much better option. 1. Groove Me 2. 'Round and 'Round (Merry Go 'Round of Love) 3. Teddy's Jam 4. I Like 5. Spend the Night 6. Piece of My Love 7. My Fantasy 8. Wanna Get With U 9. Let's Chill 10. Do Me Right 11. D-O-G Me Out 12. Let's Stay Together 13. Teddy's Jam 2 14. Tell Me What You Like 15. Why You Wanna Keep Me From My Baby 16. Dancin' 17. Rescue Me The tracks in bold aren't on the Millennium Collection. I can't believe they didn't include their second single, "'Round and 'Round." You really need to get the special edition of the debut with 6 12" mixes.
