Hehehe, I think it was Prince's father who introduced him to jazz. I suppose Eric Leeds' playing was something Prince could incorporate into the music he was playing then and make it better. Prince once said something in the vein of that Eric played the sax as Prince would have, if he had played it.

Nah, let them think Eric hipped P to jazz..u know..whatever. Of course his own dad, who played jazz, wouldn't had hip his son to anything right? Of course not. It sounds better perhaps if Eric hipped P to jazz, I guess. U know, like how Wendy, not Lisa, just Wendy, how she hipped P to The Beatles. That's more....interesting I guess. Cuz Lisa was too black her damn self so...It HAD to be Wendy. Hmmm,...I wonder who hipped P to Carlos. (Oh, that's Santana for those who were wondering who Carlos was)..

This stuff is funny as hell. I guess Prince lived in a cave and had no access 2 radio, tv, live concerts and record stores. Thank God these folks came along and hipped Prince 2 some other things.....living in Minnesota and all.

I see it like this, Prince was evolving and his band needed to also evolve. As members go:
Sheila E. is a more versatile drummer than Bobby Z. and he even recognized that.

Miko is a better guitar player than Wendy. She's alot better now but Miko is still a more skilled player.

Brownmark is a funky bass player who is just as good or better than any bass player Prince has ever had. He just seemed to get lost, but his skills were top notch.

Dr. Fink is... Dr. Fink. Funky as hell. Wish he was still there.

Lisa could have stayed too, very skilled classical player, lacked vocal range Prince was looking for.

With that being said the SOTT/Lovesexy bands were the best bands Prince assembled skill wise, though Brownmark would have fit in perfectly.

Interesting theory. Does this statement come from Boni Boyer joining the band? I guess everyone has different tastes. Ever listened to Splash?

Brown Mark often gets knocked, but Prince did want to keep Mark on bass after the Revolution, so Prince obviously considered him more than capable enough.

Prince really wanted Sheila in the band, but Bobby had been there the longest, so it was a difficult decision. Like someone said above, even Bobby admits that Sheila was more versatile and felt no ill feelings (within reason) when Prince let him go.

Like HamsterHuey says, the Wendy & Lisa situation was sticky because Prince was dating Susannah and it gave for a messy breakup romantically and professionally. But I think at least Lisa had the wider ability to stay in a more versatile band line-up.

And Matt stayed on. So really, there was only one clear cut case of Prince considering a band member as an inferior player to their eventual replacement.

confuse She has the vocal range listen to Mountains. The one screaming besides Prince is her.Even Wendy said(hinted) that there was only one other that can do that and she looked at Lisa when she said it on the PR anniversery Edition.

Agree with everything you said.I was just listening to some SOTT and Lovesexy shows and it still blows my mind.I'm convinced that Prince could have never gone this far, musically, with the Revolution.

The Revoloution on the Parade tour were great - I loved that sound - Far better than all incarnations of the NPG up to the ONA tour. The '87 - '88 band I would rate up there with the two previously mentioned.

Handel

Nobody was saying the Revolution werent a capable band, just that they no longer as as tight or as versatile for the purposes of the shows P was devising for both SOTT and Lovesexy, personal tensions within the revolution notwithstanding... and I do believe his band DID reach its zenith during 88. Fuck that horn section provided the backing to some of the funkiest moments of the entire decade and some wanker can now go posting here on the org and say P aint funky cos he needs to get some attention - well, to say P aint funky is complete bollocks. P generated more heat with the Lovesexy band than any other outfit dead or alive. And Eric Leeds is one of the most underrated sax players of all time maybe cos he's ginger and looks kinda weedy. As for Levi Seacer the man was fonky and made Brownmark look like a dummy...
