Prince "Why should I do this..." "Why should I do that When I can do this?
This weird mixture of rap, beats and big-band horns is very illustrative Prince's mindset. As a artist always trying to break new ground and resist the expectations of friends and foes alike. Hasn't Prince been continually posing this question to fans and critics since he started? Its one Prince's greatest qualities. The ability to go left when others perfer he go right. The direction Prince's career takes is always more interesting then the path others would have chosen for him. Thirty years in the business at the level of noteriety and success proves that Prince has been astute in steering his own career path. If this was not case none of us would be even bothered to comment on him 30 years since his debut. Even those who claim that Prince has fallen off are on the edge of their seats waiting for the next chapter in the story. Prince Truly has no peers.

I love this song.
Together with 2045: Radical Man, I think they are the best songs of the last decade.

watch the haters will come soon saying how trash of a song this is ...
but i'm like y'all this song is banging!!! the only thing i question now tho is, u got fans screaming he do things in his past and his accomdated those (in his live sets nothing but past shit) and i'm still waiting 4 him 2 "do this" (go avant garde and stay within the past decade or so of live material, closest was the ONA tour) man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Great song and great thread. The haters will be here any minute now. The countdown begins:
5,4,3..... I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The last 3 albums have all been short concise records aiming toward the mainstream fan. I'm ready for a NEWS or TRC. Most would hate it probably but I would take a whole hiphop leaning album or an Undertaker like approach. I think he should do something that leaves us all shaking our heads at the whole audacity of it (whether we like it or not)

I may buy it, but I wasn't impressed with the snippets I heard at the store I like that lyric though... would I have heard that on another track? (oh one more thing... babe, I love Prince, and I think you're ok... but saying prince has no peers gives me the shits-it makes you sound like a tool... any chance you could stop?... and 1!)

The go take a big ass shit! If I feel he has no peers what is that to u? Only a tool whould call someone else a tool for having an opinion on their favorite artist. If u feel Prince has peers good for u. I could care less and don't need to resort to calling u out of your name. Its a shame people like u even come to the site.

i think that 4 a very long time he's produced music that he alone loves - just 4 himself...
if other people like it then that's a bonus

Together with 2045: Radical Man, I think they are the best songs of the last decade. wouldn't say all that . y should i do that... is a funky track though, with prince tryna be rakim or somebody . some rhymes here and there, i'll give him that . 2045: radical man holds a special place in my heart though, as it is one of the first few songs i remember really bumping of prince's, from spike's bamboozled soundtrack. such a weird and funky song with some oddball lyrics. prince making half-sense as usual . love that song . wish he'd a played it live before he stopped cussing . "...where ya gonna stay . oh my god, it's the green mile..." [Edited 8/27/08 3:10am] For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I like the eclectic style of P's music. TRC is 1 of my favorite albums from P [musically]. Every style of music P's done has open my eyes. I used 2 play an instrument in my younger years and I have that drive and love back since being in2 P's music. [I became a fan of P's back in 96]. True enough, anything P drops between now and the coming years I'm going 2 buy but his music still takes me there ... Emotionally ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
