I already had the album, and was on my way to becoming a big fan's of P. I LOVED Bambi, Why You Wanna and With You. I was wearing the album out. All of this before I ever saw P on television. I was hooked on P's music and his musicianship. I didn't have a clue how the cat was as a performer. So when I saw him on AB, ...I saw the Mick Jagger/Leif Garret thing right away. But during his interview...I thought he came off very...un-cool. And ESPECIALLY during that time, being cool was crucial. He seemed like his plan to not speak to Dick dawned on him that shit was backfiring. He could sense that he was coming off not quite like he had planned. You can actually hear a few people snickering during the interview....As a very young kid, I was kinda let down by P's persona. I didn't think he was weird. I thought he didn't know how to give an interview. He was trying to come off like David Bowie; Aloof, distant, untouchable. But Bowie always had charm and was always professional. Prince didn't show any of these traits. I think P was so determined to not talk that even when he sensed that the shit wasn't coming off right, he still held on to it. That was my first impression. Visually, I thought Dez looked the coolest out of everybody. He seemed the most confident as well.
P's never been big on interviews. He prefers to sing rather than talk. I think he planned on just singing and not talking.

I will forgive them both because it was so early on. i'm glad he has grown out of that sort of thing now though. Well even at that time in Jan, 80, Dick Clark was a bonafide legend. He had already been around FOREVER at that stage. Personally, I think Dick was hella cool with Prince's "interview". Dick spotted what P was up to right away and adjusted. I don't believe Dick meant to insult where P came from (The Twin Citites). But because it was, at that time, an unlikely place to many for someone doing what P was doing, to hail from there. Not that he was "knocking" the state or the city itself. P used Dick's "slight" of his hometown as the "reason" he didn't talk. Which wasn't the case at all. P already had it planned long before how he was going to act during that part. I never believed P has or had a shy bone in his body. I do think P was unsure how he wanted to come across at that stage...to go with his image at that time. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I do think P was unsure how he wanted to come across at that stage...to go with his image at that time. I know nothing about Dick Clark or AB, so I will take your word for it. I'm not convinced that Prince isn't shy though. Sure, he plays games (and did here), but i also think more often than not, he is also uncomfortable. Hey, maybe the games is something he does to give him something to focus on and helps him forget he's there. I guess those sorts of shows are not really the sort of thing I'm into when i want to see an interview... when its about promotion. We have 2 main guys over here that get to interview big celebs. one does 30hour interviews and does a massive amount or research and goes to a huge effort to make the subject feel comfortable and ask questions that get them to talk... its a conversation and I'm often amazed at the results. The other guy is this half assed comedian who has a variety show and spends more time trying to be funny than anything else. This is the guy who Prince had to talk to when he did his musicology tour. It was so embarrassing. So, I think when i whinge about interviews, it is because I have a personal preference for interviews rather than appearances. They are two very different things. This was obviously an appearance, and I guess in that case it is the artist's responsibility to present themselves and certain way, and the host's responsibility to do his own thing (being charasmatic and what not)

A bit off topic, but, I remember when i was first getting into P. The only albums I had were Musicology and Purple Rain. Now because of When Doves Cry I KNEW I wanted to learn how to play guitar. But when I went out and got this album and began to listen to it, I liked Why You Wanna alot, but when I heard Bambi for the first time, I was blown away and fell IN LOVE with this song. Even today I frequently blast this cut, it's like part of me because it was the first P song I learned on guitar. It was my favorite, until an hour or so later I listened to Controversy

Yes, it was planned, he was trying to come across as 'cool' but it did kind of backfire, and he just ended up looking a bit like he had that disease called 'stupid' Actually, he acted a bit like a stroppy 5 year old .. Bless him....!!
