So cute! It started out as a bit of a Mick Jagger impersonation. Seems as though he took Mick's classic looking left and looking right....changed it up a little to looking left and right but not turning his head.....looks good on him!!!

As for the vid itself, I wonder how long it's going to be before Prince's camp gets ahold of it and demands it be taken down? Right now there's a lot of Prince and Prince-related vids on Youtube again.

True! and I am sure that was considered BIG money back then. I found a picture of the contract that Prince had to sign to perform on AB. I did'nt know if I could post it or not.

I don't know if that was really considered "big money", but it'd be an impressive anmount for someone still just starting out, for sure!

Just because the album was released in 1979 doesn't mean that everything that had to do with it also happened in 1979. The song ("I Wanna Be Your Lover") wasn't a HIT until February 1980 (when it hit #11 on the U.S. Pop Charts and knocked Michael's "Off The Wall" out of the top spot on the U.S. Black charts). Other singles followed. This American Bandstand performance aired on January 26, 1980. Dez has since said that many things the band did back then was to get people talking, and before the Bandstand performance Prince had planned to NOT answer any of the questions at all. He purposely wanted to stand out by being weird and doing what other people probably wouldn't dare to do. Props to Dick Clark -- it didn't seem to affect him at all; though, he still says this was the toughest interview he ever did. As for Prince, really not much has changed, has it?

and he always had the tightest little body! I mean seriously, no body fat just tight little muscles and that cute ass. His arms were much bigger then. Of course he wasn't doing the vegan shit. Men really should eat some meat if only a little (off topic I know - wuteva).
Andre was so cute but he kinda hat that deer in the headlights look! Not so sure he was cut out for the fame game. Dez, my sweet Dez, he and I have the same name. And they all got high heel boots? WTF? All of them were short? eek
i want me a munchkin sandwich made out of those 3!

It was planned but he was also pissed about the comment. Jon Bream quoted Prince as saying after the show; "That really tripped me out when Dick Clark asked how I could come from Minneapolis of all places. That really gave me an attitude for the rest of the interview. A place is a place. People are people. I don't know where he expected me to come from."

I think much has changed as it relates to interviews. check out the interview he did with CNBC promoting "Musicology", it was great!!! he was even somewhat flirtatious with the interviewer. IMO he was very at ease.

I'd be pissed too. It's not the first time that he has had to respond to studpid comments and questions IMO. I get really frustrated with the interviewer...
I know that Prince isn't a natural when it comes to dealing with the media, but I don't think that is entirely his fault. If the person asking questions did a little research and put a little thought into how to approach the interview we might hear him say something of interest about his music and his creative process.

When he's interviewed by a lady, we are sometimes tricked into thinking he's saying something because we are distracted by the flirting.

There are exceptions to my rant (sorry) I realise, and I know he has this whole mystreious personna thing going on.... still, I would enjoy a decent interview.

2 interviews I enjoyed:

The radio interview after his B'day show in detroit (86)... this is the only time I can think of that we get any insight into Prince's creative process.

"I hear things in my sleep, I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and all of a sudden the toothbrush starts vibrating";

"to me making songs is like a new girl walking in the room, you never know what's going to happen till all thing come together and there she stands, and she says 'hi', you know, and you want to take a bite of this orange, you bite it and its cool and i send it to you";

response to what's your favorite instrument (a great Q)..."hmmm stewardesses.. no listen, it depends on the song, it depends on the colour, they all sound differently. Its very strange, I try to be original in my work, alot of sounds have been used now, I'm looking for new instruments and new sounds.... we've just scratched the surface, its limitless"

...this is the sort of thing that is worth hearing IMO.

Also the interview in London, when he wouldn't talk... while obviously useless, she atleast did her job.... how he managed to still flirt with her through Mayte, was also hilarious.

Im glad u posted that. I would love to hear more on his creative process but this gets overshadowed by the games he plays. I like the games, I love his voice but I want to know how these songs/children get born. Plus, I thought at the time he was on American Bandstand , he wasn't really 19 but 21. I remember reading an article that said he pushed his age back. When Dick Clark asks him his age, he says 19 in a way that's somewhat suspect. But he does act 19!

Prince was 21 when he was on AB. I clearly remember seeing this when it originally aired. This was the first time I had ever seen P on television. I already had the album, and was on my way to becoming a big fan's of P. I LOVED Bambi, Why You Wanna and With You. I was wearing the album out. All of this before I ever saw P on television. I was hooked on P's music and his musicianship. I didn't have a clue how the cat was as a performer. So when I saw him on AB, ...I saw the Mick Jagger/Leif Garret thing right away. But during his interview...I thought he came off very...un-cool. And ESPECIALLY during that time, being cool was crucial. He seemed like his plan to not speak to Dick dawned on him that shit was backfiring. He could sense that he was coming off not quite like he had planned. You can actually hear a few people snickering during the interview....As a very young kid, I was kinda let down by P's persona. I didn't think he was weird. I thought he didn't know how to give an interview. He was trying to come off like David Bowie; Aloof, distant, untouchable. But Bowie always had charm and was always professional. Prince didn't show any of these traits. I think P was so determined to not talk that even when he sensed that the shit wasn't coming off right, he still held on to it. That was my first impression. Visually, I thought Dez looked the coolest out of everybody. He seemed the most confident as well.
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

I agree that the whole not talking thing didn't come across as cool, but neither did that Dick fella.

I will forgive them both because it was so early on.

i'm glad he has grown out of that sort of thing now though.
