Parental Guidence on Sexually Explicit Material.

Parental Guidence on Sexually Explicit Material.

Do you believe that Prince was one of the first musicians to require this kind of album labeling?

Although a person is responsible for their own actions regardless of what they see or hear, do you believe that visual pornography is equivalent to sound pornography?

I personally do not believe that listening to an "Orgasm," is the same as seeing one being made.

Let'z talk. razz

The formation of the PMRC began in 1984 after Tipper Gore, along with her daughter Karenna, heard Prince's song "Darling Nikki." This track, which appears on the soundtrack to the film Purple Rain, contains references to sex and masturbation ("I knew a girl named Nikki/I guess you could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobby/Masturbating with a magazine").

Yes, with Darling Nikki

Although a person is responsible for their own actions regardless of what they see or hear, do you believe that visual pornography is equivalent to sound pornography?

There was a Supreme Court Justice called Stewart in the 60s, and he was working on a case where he had to define what hardcore porn was in accordance with obscenity laws or something. When it came time for him to give his definition, the only thing he could say was, "I'll know it when I see it. IMO, it's the same way with sound a bit - I'll know it when I hear it. Some sounds you hear, and you think "so what?" but there are some sounds that could be disturbing.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my high school government teacher for teaching me something I can use in conversations. lol

This need to censor and protect children from sexually explicit material bothers me...

Why do we feel we need to protect them

http://www.youtube.com/wa...g1PEoQ_cq8

let's talk about sex!!!

why are we more concerned about the subject of sex than we are about guns or anything else...
Are we just embarrassed or do we actually think that the children will be damaged in some way?

Maybe cd's with SEM should be sold with condoms instead

I agree with Robinesque.
Its kinda funny, I was watching The Hulk II with my dad a while ago. And he said that they should have cut the "sex scene" (there was no actual sex) out b/c kids would be watching it. I couldn't believe it, that was a violent ass movie with people getting exploded and their heads crushed in but the only objection he had with it was a 30 second scene of two people getting rubby with each other. confused

What the hell is wrong with American culture? Sex gives life, Violence kills. That's a pretty easy equation. confused

That is interesting..."He'll know it when He sees it." I agree with that...because a visual act...is imagined for you...not to say that your own ideas don't accompany visual stimulation, they do. An audio description, allows your mind to travel and contain your own imagination only.

Do you know if it was based on the song alone? Or was this persued after the movie's debut?

I wonder if these people watch tv at all today? cool
I'm a Christian that stands by Prince. That is a long explanation.

I have to add...If I would have been Prince's manager at the time...I would have told him not to use "Darling Nikki," in the movie...As a friend, or Prince music lover...It didn't bother me, although even at 18 years old...I knew the problems it was going to lead to...For Prince.

I believe it was just the song not the movie. You have to understand society at this time was recovering from the influx of uninhibited sex from the sixties / seventies era. Society was changing and Prince was one of the artists to use explicit lyrics in his songs.

I just listened to Orgasm and I was locked onto the guitar (which I'm sure I heard on Private Joy?!). There is something altogether pleasant about hearing a woman enjoying herself- and I don't mean that in a crude way. Playing back your lady to 20 million people though is a bit weird.

Was this track ever performed in concert wink ?

Pplrain is right: those Parental Advisory labels were inspired first and foremost by Darling Nikki. I remember the news conference.

I don't think Prince was the first one to receive one though; since those stickers began right away on new releases.

Funny - that song is tame by today's standards (actually, it wasn't even that bad back then).

Darling nikki at the time must have been a real shoker when it came out... but now-a-days that song pales in comparison to some hardcore raw lyrics on some hip hop records. I feel Prince and especially that song imperticular definately pushed the envolope for more artists to talk freely about what they wanted..no matter how 'explicit' it is.

It's not half as bad as the songs he was doing BEFORE that. confused
