I was just double checking that my comments match up with copyright in Australia

A couple of kids up north are doing community service for uploading videos(but with suspended sentences.. so still have a criminal record, which has its own consequences)

Crap, I break copyright laws alllll the time. All those mixed tapes I make at xmas and valentines day... whooops

Actually, i suspected as much. I'm such a friggen rebel!

Anyway.. I was wondering if it might be worth having some of this information on the org permanently. Philisophical discussions aside, i think people should know when they are breaking the law.

for example
1. watching clips/mp3's would not be illegal (i don't think)
but,
2. downloading or uploading or sharing outside your immediate family or household would be (this is with official material) unless you had a licence to do so
3. playing music in a public forum without a licence is a no no
4. apparently dj's can't play copies of vinyl without permission (they can play the original vinyl though.. assuming the venue is licenced)

usually we know when we have broken the law, but I think with copyright, things get so complicted, people don't realise that they are doing something illegal.

I think it would also be useful to know what sites provide legit MP3's. Is it just itunes?

the right and wrong of this issue could be debated for days... but the legality of ways that music can be shared shouldn't be so difficult to understand

mods: some links with the bootleg statement could be useful

If you grew up during the eighties like I did you would know that before youtube we used cassete tapes to record off the radio or albums. That's how we shared back then

Damn rights! I used to use cassettes to tape off the radio and tape 12" and 45's and selected tracks off my LPs and tape them onto cassette for myself or for parties/dances where I provided the music. The cassettes are still in excellent working condition to this day.

There was a report in the 80's that for every album sold there were between 6 - 8 copies floating around. I imagine the staistics are the same today.

I still have some of my cassettes for nostalgia smile

you're missing the point. as the creator and artist, the material belongs to him, as it is copyrighted. period. he has the right to decide who and what and where and how his material is used. period. end of sentence.

It's often said that a person is only as good as his weakest day. So Prince, about all those James Brown bootlegs... wink

And, heck, at the end of the day it's only a bunch of hit and miss, poorly recorded (mostly) songs that no normal punter would bother with. I mean who the hell would listen to (or rate) Vibrator?

My opinion? I reckon Prince likes those bootlegs being out there. Possibly even lets them through. Official material is a different kettle of fish altogether mind you. Wouldn't like someone stealing my creations. Then again they're that crap it would be almost flattering.

I know for a fact that P has his people spying here. I made a post a long time ago about a former band member. Next thing I know I was getting an email and call from that person about what I had posted. Word had gotten back that P didn't really care for that etc etc.

All that to say, watch yo back.

The good thing about it is he does read our reviews of his music.

err confuse so, you're to have us believe, that an opinion you posted on an internet message board, got Prince's people so upset that actually sought your phone number out and called you? falloff

You're [Name calling snip - luv4u]. The former band member had my number already-we were discussing some things. It got back to that person that I had posted it here. That's when I got a call saying it was a no no and P got wind of it.

Ah, ok, well that makes it a bit more believable. Thanks for the clarification. But there really is no need for the insult - it's actually wise to be skeptical when reading things on internet message boards - too many wacky. But sorry if you found my flat-out disbelief offensive. wink

Ahh.....What ever happened to the good ol' days!

But when the tape broke you had to get a steak knife and unscrew the top and untangle the tape and use scotch tape to fix it. Then there would be a silence right there in that part of the song. We use to wear those tapes out!

lol! Yeah and if the tape came out you had to stick your finger in one of those holes and keep turning till it was fixed lol

Dear friends, just wanted to let all of you prince fans know please listen to what the moderator says on here about posting links.....I would go as far as to say if someone orgnotes you and ask where did you get something from please do not respond. Why you may ask? Well lets just say I discovered some precious gems and recieved some orgnotes...me wanting to share with my fellow fans(or so I thought) willingly gave the link. Now I am sad to say I have destroyed something that was good. Friends please be careful....you just never know who's lurking on here.

I think I know the precious gems you're talking about hmmm
