Actually, I find it very difficult to believe Prince was a "trailblazer" or to have mastered of any genre.

Why so skeptical?

Because nobody talks about him in that manner. I rarely hear him talked about at all and in those cases, it was because people thought he was a freak or because they think he's great in all respects.
He's such an under-rated artist, which I find to be very sad.

Truth is that I never thought of him to be a "funk" artist and never heard him put in that category until I came here. Don't you think if he was that it'd be as common knowledge as the fact that he was involved in "Purple Rain?"

It is rare when a person can just be themself and have such a following of people who like not only the uniqueness of what they do, but who they are. This is what Prince has achieved. He has a definate unique style, that is not only singular, but enjoyed by many.

Being different is easy. Being different but also good, now that is what makes a star.

I'm sorry, i think I have to disagree with you on this one. i really don't think that this is so rare.

I agree that prince was a different sort of artist and maybe he bridged a R&B/ standard chart divide in a new way.... but I don't think that he is anywhere near being alone or without peers in being unique and good.

This idea that Prince is without peers (and it is one I see alot of here).. I try and respect this view. You have your right to your opinion... but I when I see someone write a post ike this I get a little irritated (and that doesn't happen alot).

I love prince, and have listen to nothing but Prince for 3 months (coming out of it now thank god)...

he is definately special but hey! he just got into the rock and roll hall of fame.. so how is he underrated?

And he is in very good company (not to mention the artists not inducted who are also 'different and good').

I think what irritation is on behalf of those other artists to whom I also feel a weird sense of loyalty.

I think I also feely a little sorry for people who truly beleive this, because I feel that they must have been deprived of really good music somewhere along the line.

Wow, how did I get taken so wrongly? Oh yeh. I didn't take the time to elaborate and I opened the door for someone else to put meaning in my words. My fault.

I'm sorry, i think I have to disagree with you on this one. i really don't think that this is so rare.>>> his wierdness is rare

I am mainly speaking of P's style here. It is unique, and for lack of a better word at the time, I called it good, and what I really MEANT was his style has attracted a fan base.

Ok.. I actually meant to add that my post shouldn't be taken as an attack on you... (but I had to rush out and I didn't get a chance to edit... I apologise.

It was more meant as acknowledgement of my feelings towards a particular viewpoint that some have expressed on various threads, including this one.

So, while I quoted you and responded to you, it may have been more appropriate to respond to some of the earlier posts.

The other post I quoted said that he was underrated. My response was meant as a general comment.

When I say that I try to respect this view... I do actually mean it. But sometimes I still feel that physical reaction of irritation.

I think that something else is also going on... which has to do with the throwing around of terms like Hater and KAK, as if there are only two categories of prince fan. As if either of these are really all that valid anyway.

I think that 'KAK's' (or rather people accused of this who think Prince is alone in his genius) probably just need to be exposed to a wider range of music styles and

the 'Hater's' (and I was king of suprised to discover that i was one) are simply people who love Prince's music but love a love other artists just a enthusiastically because they are just as influential (in multiple ways), also pushing music in new directions, being quirky and taking massive artistic risks... and all this stuff gets eaten up precisly because it is new and fresh. This is just the evolution of music and it's a continuous process. Some artists like Prince (and a multitude of others) have more impact than others. Prince had a huge impact in Pop, but surely even here he is not alone.

So.. I did understand what you meant by good and weird.. I just think he is one pearl on a long string.

I take nothing away from Prince, but i do not beleive that his impact/influence exceeds that of a large number of other artists...

For the purpose of this topic (to get back to it finally)... I would say that I do not beleive that his influence/impact (and I am not denying it) on Funk exeeded that of Rick James.

this is just my opinion based on what i have read and heard.... I'm happy for you to disagree.

Again, apologies for not editing my post.

I've said this before, but I believe Prince had a brand of funk that was not pure funk but was pure Prince, idiosyncratic and kooky. I'm glad other people can see that. His funk was missing a bit of the hard edge of the main guys and I think that's because of where he was from. His funk didn't quite have the grit and aggression of true funk, so I would say that his funk was mutant funk. Still was funky as hell though.

We share a lot of the same ideas, my initial post was vague and over generalized, so it would be easy to take a large number of meanings from it.

I don't know if P has had an inflence on funk, to tell you the truth. I have listened to some funk, I know it when I hear it, but I am no resource on it.

I believe funk has an influence on P, cause he writes music that can be funky. Even though there is a funk twist on it all, I still see him as a r/b pop artist that sometimes gets a funk flavor on top.

It's almost easy to take a song like Gett Off and call it funk. To me it is not, it is a P style song with a funky groove.

Once again, I am not a resource for funk knowledge.

We share ideas in here, and everything I say is totally speculation on this subject. I have never been a musician, never really studied music in a professional or educational sense, so I am sure that is a world of knowledge I do not know.

you are absolutely correct, however, the feeling of funk is in your face, aggressive urbane. Prince is not really that in it's strictest definition. Listen to "Money" by the O'jays or "Fire" by whichever band sang that or any of rick james' live stuff and you'll know what we mean when we say Prince is not funk emotionally. Nothing he's recorded is even remotely that in your face.

have you not listen to his first three albums? Pure PHONK!

plus all the sexual things he sings about is the embodiment funk essence. he may have gone more rock towards the latter half of his career but he started off funking around like most would wish they could

Wow. Thanks for the kind words, although i don't know if i can live up to raising anyone's expectations for the Org.

I LIKE your topic idea, because i actually do think that Prince has run out of ideas. I think that it happens to all the great artists eventually. And of course i'm a big enough asshole to start that!

Although i think i might be busy with this thread again cuz there's some stuff that i feel compelled respond to.

And for the record, i didn't fire this thing up again. It got up like a zombie!!!

prince is one funky mothafuckin individual

have you not listen to his first three albums? Pure PHONK!

plus all the sexual things he sings about is the embodiment funk essence. he may have gone more rock towards the latter half of his career but he started off funking around like most would wish they could

-disciple of funk

(groan)

here we go again.
look. just because some of ya'll like to say that Prince is "funk" and then you think because you spell it in a cute way (fonk, phonk, phunk) that it reinforces your argument somehow.

and let me see if i understand what you're saying.

you are saying that For You (disco), Prince (more disco) and Dirty Mind (new wave/rock) are all funk records.

and that you are a disciple of "funk". really?

you seem pretty clueless on the topic to be a "disciple" to me.....

Chill on calling people KAKS or idiots for not agreeing with you already.

I haven’t read this whole thread so forgive me if I’m repeating this question.

What, in your opinion are the top 20 "PURE" funk songs,...so it can help me understand where you are coming from.
someone else mentioned "Money" and "Fire" as funk songs, ...heck I always thought they were just some of the baddest RnB songs ever written, but FUNK?....I dunno, but that’s me.

So please your top 20 "Pure" Funk songs
