Purple Rain, followed closely by Sign Of The Times.
I know people love to slam Purple Rain because it is somehow uncool to admit one´s love for that album among the true hardcore fans but come on, this is the album that has The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain on it.
And you can tell that he himself holds it in high regards judging by how much of that album´s material he´s been performing for the last four years.

i think most people when they think of prince think purple rain?
it was so much fun, totally un4gettable.

my daughter works for a very posh person, a duchess no less, & i went 2 collect her 2day but she was still busy & talking 2 the boss...i told her i'd wait in car.
i heard her say 'she's gone 2 listen 2 prince', & with tht suddenly i heard the duchess belt out purple rain.
i'm REALLY not kidding! i almost wet myself laffing.

I'd say either Purple Rain or 1999 ... I remember a lot of what I was doing back when 1999 came out and my cousin had this album and I thought 1999 had an interesting cover ...
