But, you know, I think some of it is that his new music has no memories attached to it, no connotations. I mean, when you're a kid, that stuff mean a lot to you, waiting days to get a new record the day it comes out. Losing your virginity to Adore or some shit like that. Your first concert being the PR tour. When you're 38, that ain't happening no more. You're life's got other priorities. I agree with what you said, cause nostalgia's a powerful thing - heck that is one of the reasons why Musicology was so successful - he was riding peoples' memories. But by that argument, shouldn't you, as a teenager, be diggin on his new stuff? Your first P concert, new release, etc.?

The only forceful things lately are you multitude of threads on the subject and the way you keep trumpeting yourself as 'true fan' compared to 'so-called fans', dividing liking or disliking certain albums/material into being a 'good' fan or a 'bad' fan. This, of course, is bullshit. You come over as heated because you seem to be doing the same thing as you accuse the 'so-called' fans of doing; closing your mind. You say 'so-called' fans do that to Prince music, while you do it to fellow fans, thread after thread. I said before, and will say again, that taste is subjective and it's not necesary to label fans. You just take into stride they disagree with you and you discuss the music, not the people themselves. I still do not think liking more Prince music than somebody else makes anyone a bigger fan. I personally think its possible to OVERDO listening to a favorite artist..
Jimi hendrix is my Life..But, I rarely feel the need to sit around listening to his music these days.. Maybe bootlegs,DVDs, Live stuff..But, after a while Its just a part of you.. Prince from 1979-around Lovesexy was that for me.. after that..Whats left..? trying to find the few gems on Graffiti Bridge while ignoring the throwaways..? or blasting a few cuts on Diamonds and Pearls and blocking out Jughead..? Or listening to him channel other artist that Im very familiar with already..? James Brown.. prettyman..the work..musicology..or the last jam he played on leno.. P-unk/Sly/Graham... Much of the mid 90's NPG stuff.. Herbie hancock. Much of the Rainbow children.. or Jimi..or Joni or.....? At some point I personally feel we all mature and investigate other things... The people that dont, I imagine are the ones that are amazed everytime Prince releases something.. And they could care less about where he got the inspiration from.. Good call, good call. Actually, Musicology, and the time around that, is very special to me. I'm not gonna forget when that song was ALL OVER the black music stations where I live, me asking my brother who did this song, him telling me "Prince." I ain't gonna forget the '04 grammys and my dad playing P and Beyonce OVER and OVER and OVER again (He taped it.) I'm not gonna forget his ass being all over TV, on BET on the NAACP awards for the coupla years after that. And get this, the most special memory of P for me (Its lame, I warn you) Is the guitar commercial Because that's when I started actually started collecting his music. 
Now, why I love 78-83, so much? Your guess is as good as mine. That's some internal shit going on there. I just feel that music so much more. He was really a different person then. I think that might be it. I'm speshul like dat.

He's definitely in a creative rut, but that doesn't mean what he puts out is garbage.
Prince has a very fine line of wanting to be mainstream and wanting to be independent. . . the last 3 albums (Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth) have been blatantly mainstream, while the ones leading up to 2004 (The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone, NEWS, Xpectation, C-Note) were not . . . |
