I know some black people cant dance and some white people can. But black people have a stronger ability to find rhythm and beat..whats the shoker? Its not like its never been said before.

With the exception of me and my fellow Prince fans, all white people lose any funkiness they may have had by the time they reach 30.

There should be a law that says white women over the age of 30 are not allowed to try to get funky on the dance floor. This may be news to the non-Prince world, but doing the hand-jive DOES NOT qualify as funk.

He did that a lot in the early days.
Again, it wasn't until 1999 that Prince had a white following at all. Before that the majority of his fans were black.

I'm cracking up reading this thread. I saw Springsteen a couple of weeks ago... over 50,000 folks all dancing 2 different beats at the same time! disbelief

seriously, i do earnestly believe blacks and white have different rhythm inherantly, but that doesnt make one right or wrong, cuz we usually end up dancin to the same shit.

but as far as P is concerned...he just got off on playing "soul man" to the suburbs... this prob all stems from his experiences playing at high schools. he likes to be "the hip new black kid who can rock the blacks and hip the whites to some soul" makes him feel like sly

The irony is that he sings that line on a song in which it is VERY easy to find the four! lol
Now, showing people where to clap on Delirious may have been a little more helpful. It's a hot mess watching folks sort that one out! falloff

Of course he's making fun of white people not having rhythm in that song. So what? In general, it's true. If you don't believe it, look at the old episodes of "American Bandstand" and the old episodes of "Soul Train" and compare the dancing in the two. Black folks were getting off while white folks were hopping around like rabbits....that same little rhytmless "Carlton" dance that the girl in the Bruce Springsteen video used to do was all they seemed to know.

Of course there are exceptions to everything. If you are one of the exceptions, then don't take offense. I my damn self am white but I listened to black music (only the hardest, most blackest funk), hung out with, were best friends with, partied with, danced with, had sex with, and basically did anything with black folks from 1979 on up. The only white person that could compete with me would be Teena Marie and even that bitch ain't as bad as me. So if you are an exception, don't take offense whatsoever. Hell, join in on the fun making of those that don't have rhythm.

And just like there are exceptions on the white side, there are exceptions on the black side. Shitney Houston has less rhythm than Lawrence Welk. And shit hoppers, oh Lord, don't get me started on their rhythmless asses. And they call themselves black. lol

The only part of it that bothers me, is that if it was a white artist poking fun at people of colour, they'd be strung up.

no kidding. some of the comments up in here inexcusably malicious and, well, stupid. people with musical talent have rythym, regardless of their skin color. people who do not have musical talent do not have rythym, regardless of skin color.

musical talent has nothing to do with skin color, people

c'mon people,. we can do better than this isht. grow up

they don't really have many black folk in Melbourne, but luckily they do tend to play Black music at clubs and sell it at record stores and this seems to have been enough to get me through life
Luckily, the war in Sudan means that alot of refugees have moved here, so things are looking up for white folk in Australia....

i am 33 and white, i will continue to dance like no-one is watching on the 2 or 3 occasions a year that i take to the dance floor. lol lol

P.S. the scene in The Jerk where he gets his rhythm is brilliant.

It was 1982. Look at how segregated radio was at that time. Black stations played funk, which was danceable, and white stations played pop/rock music and the only black artists they would play would be the ones that watered their music down and took a lot of the funk and danceability out of it. And as for the listeners, very few of either race ventured over to explore the "other" stations.

Apparently, a lot of white people at that time didn't care to or want to dance, at least not in a very ass shakin' way. They seemed to prefer music that was only suitable for hopping around like rabbits and do the Carlton dance. lol Just look at the uproar and backlash they started against disco because the majority of the artists were black and "corrupting" the white people to be like blacks. This was also only one decade after segregation had ended. After disco, most white people stayed as far away from black music as possible. But what trips me out is how many white people my age who love Prince and claim to "know and love funk" but didn't even know who Prince was until "Little Red Corvette" when pop/rock radio picked him up. Doesn't sound like a true funk lover to me.

I've been a performer for many years and will agree that white people absolutely do have a predisposition toward clapping on the 1 and the 3... and country music is entirely to blame!

White kids: stay away from country music, and you should be alright. wink

Country dancing is the only dancing where white people rule. But that's kinda by default.

OR (i like country)

just clap on every beat just to be safe... and then you'll have the added bonus of really strong hands
(morris day- chilli sauce 'OMG it fits, you must have strong hands, and yet they're so soft') wink

Strange topic...

I mean, when i said here in the past (rather tongue in cheek, and obviously to provocate) that black (stand up) comedians are often very shallow when it comes to the topics they talk about (sex, women, sex, homophobia, sex, drugs and sex...) i almost did get banned.

But its probably okay in here to make fun of the idea "whites = bad dancers"...
(not that i really disagree with that...lol...but...)

But...can someone explain me, are there graduations in racism, or so? And have some 'groups' other freedoms here then other 'groups'...

confused sad eek

Example:
Since it seems allowed in here to say things like this:

Have you seen how white folks dance in Minnesota?

I assume its perfectly fine to say things like:

Have you listened to how crappy the lyrics from black folks from the Bronx are?

Isn't it? wink

i'm not saying one is more appropriate than another, but to answer your question..

observation from blacks directed towards whites is usually given more leeway then the observation of blacks by whites..because (at least in america) there has been a history of systematic oppression of people of color by the "white" establishment (as was erected by whites in an attempt to distance themselves from blacks culturally and economically)

so when black people point out things about white people, most are usually in agreement (albiet unspoken) that given the history of race relations (again, at least on this continent) there is less harm in the [historically]oppressed ridiculing the [historical] oppressor.

once it's turned around (white to black). it seems like overkill.

imo. of course

Anyone else hear this? Shit..you've got to be deaf not to. He takes it even further on the First Ave gig in 83..physically clapping off time. U can hear my baby Lisa says "Oh my God" and she's real loud when she doubles with P singing the line "All the white people clap your hands on the four now!" This is all on that show. Lisa was like "I don't give a fuck..I'll say it REALLY loud! And I'm white!" She's soooo cool!

I saw another clip where he got all the white people on stage with him and he was marching out the beat for them like he was sesame street or something... lol

I thought the 'oh my god' at the benefit show was in response to an overly loud scream. I know Lisa usually does this scream, but I actually thought it was Wendy here, b/c Prince hunches over in response and then goes over to Wendy...It being her first gig with them, I thought Prince went over to give her support for stuffing up (screaming so loud she nearly blew the speakers)

Me too lol
