I like the last three Prince albums a lot but if I didn't, how would the fact that none of the other artists of the last three years not being as talented as Prince change my opinion about Prince's last three albums? An artist can be talented as hell and still make a boring ass album. Hell, Shitney Houston is a very talented vocalist. That doesn't change the fact that her music is a bunch of dull ass shit that should have never been released to influence other dull people just like her and kill funk and ruin music forever. lol

Anyway, it sounds more like you are trying to stop people from complaining about Prince albums that they don't like. That ain't gonna happen because this is America and we have the right to complain about something we don't like. I know I'm gonna complain about dull ass acoustical albums like "The Truth", dull classical type albums like "NEWS" or "Karmasutra", and shit hop type albums like "New Power Soul" as much as I can. You never know, Prince himself may be reading the site and it's our way of saying...."don't do that dull shit no more". lol

God bless your soul but I'm already aware how limited your likes are. Your listening pleasures seem to fill a pretty narrow bandwidth. By the way there is nothing "classical" about NEWS and NPS can hardly be described as hip-hop.

I don't think I'm trying to change opinions. Either u like something or u don't but what I do want people to do is put Prince's output in context with what other people are doing or not doing. If I say PE is shit and Britney Spears is shit then I am equating them as equals. I don't believe that is the case and I don't think many of us do. But when u spout off that this or that is shit it is exactly what u are doing.

Well, when I hear "New Power Soul", most of the album sounds like straight up shit hop. Now, if I say "New Power Soul" is shit and 50 Cent is shit, that doesn't mean I'm seeing Prince and 50 Cent as equals. It means I'm seeing the particular album "New Power Soul" as shit, not Prince the person. Prince has proved over the years that he has talent. That still doesn't mean that he's not capable of slumming in the shit hop gutter. Someone like 50 Cent is a shit hopper (which makes him trash to begin with) and isn't capable of being anything else but a shit hopper. Prince, on the other hand is a talented artist and when he does shit hop, he's simply lowering himself for the moment but is capable of picking himself up and doing something else.

You are misunderstanding peoples' insults towards certain albums and thinking they are towards Prince himself as an artist.

If Prince really reads this thread he'd probably be like, "They don't like it huh? Well I'll show them!" and then proceed to make the same kind of album just to try and show you why we're wrong for complaining. I'm not saying that we shouldn't complain at all cause I have my issues too but I've learned that Prince doesn't care about our complaints. He'll change it up whenever he feels like changing it up, whether we like it or not.

Oh, I know. Prince is a mean bitch just like me. I'm the exact same way. When someone doesn't like something that I do, I increase it just to piss them off more. lol But just like he likes to prove his bitchiness, I do too. Prince and me could never be a couple. We're too much alike and we'd end up killing each other trying to prove which one of us was the baddest. lol

Feel free to expound on why u feel he/they belong in the same class as the trio albums. Some of us aren't that familiar with their work. I known he produces and white stripes that I have heard are pretty rock-funk sounding. Any latin ballads? r&b ballads? James brown knock offs? Any synth funk like black sweat? and weird future funk like 3121? Any acoustic ballads? how about a rap?

I think Jack White is off hand the closest I can think of.
Why does someone have to match Prince to be comparable song for song?
If they did that, why would they even be considered for this thread?

I don't like White Stripes but I think The Ranconteurs are the shit.

The way the rules are structured no one will win.
So there is no game, there is just your insistence that to you no one measures up to Prince.
So instead of the game, you could have just made a statement and not solicited opinions or ideas you had no intention of accepting or being open to.

whaaaaatever.

like i said, you don't want a "discussion".
you want to judge every other artist that someone else might mention to "Prince standards".

like a three-year-old that wants to make up the rules to their own game, so they always win.

like i said, have fun with that.
don't be shocked if most people don't want to play.

What do they have to lose? If u really feel that such-and-such has had a better run than the trio why not make a case for it? Why don't u put up or shut up?

I think when people say the last 3 Prince albums have been of low quality they're meaning compared to other Prince albums, not necessarily to other artists.

I don't understand the point of this challenge. Everyone likes what they like. Why do we have to compare artists?

And for the record, I can assure you that Jack White can play R&B, especially the B part of it.

Well here is the point. Too many fans spend for to much time moaning about what Prince isn't doing and not appreciating what he is doing. Maybe it has something to do with the maturity of the people who post. The challenge is not to prove that Prince is better then anyone but to illustrate that in the real world of music there are few people who can do what Prince is doing right NOW not in 1987 but right NOW.

Way to fans fans act like spoiled children. Prince being very very good is not adequate for them. He must be mind-blowingly innovative and playing exactly the kind of genre they like most to be in their good graces. Some of the people who post should truly be ashamed of the sentiments they sprout on here and have more respect for a artist that we are all priviledged to be able to experince in real time. Something u aquire with age is to understand that everything and everyone is really just a shooting star that will pass someday.

Enjoy Prince while he is here because the next album, the next song, the next concert is not guaranteed.

Excellant reply. This is what I'm looking for. Mr. White has had an excellant run. I can't critique those albums since I haven't heard them but I know Mr. White has been a critical darling as of late. Basically what u are saying is that Mr. White while very hard working and talented is running in one lane. U seem to imply that they don't do R&B ballads because that is not there audience. How about they don't do R&B ballads because they can't do them? That is also a possibility. From your own mouth they failed in one of the criteria I set forth and that was scope of variety.

Interesting. You want to discuss quantity and quality. How about evaluating the work of an artist from what s/he has to tell and contribute with? Mr. White may not be doing R&B because he doesn't know how to, but maybe also because it's not in his lingo, so to speak. From that perspective yes, Prince is certainly the master of speaking various languages through his music (styles). But that doesn't necessarily make him a greater artist in the sense of what his message is, what he wants to pass on to the listener/viewer?

That said, I don't know White, and I still think Prince is the greatest artist including the years 2004-2007.

Josh Homme. Simple. Better, even, than Jack White. A simply magnificent musician who, through QOTSA, The Desert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal has met, matched and munched Prince's output over the past few years.

Exactly.
This one sits here and whines and then accuses anyone that doesn't think the way that HE does of being "immature", it's a joke.

Everyone doesn't have to be a kool-aid-kid to be a fan (yeah i said it).

And how the hell can you even have a "discussion" like this when you're not even that well versed on music? Already there's been mention of two extremely popular artists and you're like "never heard of them".

Again, you think P is the god of music and there is only one god for ya. We get it. You could just say that, instead of pretending to actually want to discuss the possibility that he's NOT.

I nominate Tom Waits-
2006 he put out a great triple cd 'brawlers, bawlers and bastards'
2004 'real gone'
2004 'Blood money' and 'alice'

The Beastie Boys- maybe not as prolific, but still two albums since 2003 and both very cool

plus both nominations doing relevent work after already long healthy careers (not that I don't like prince's new works, I just like these betta!)

are you serious! this is the criteria you want to put forward to support the idea that prince is still a great artist? that says nothing at all about the quality of the work. I liked 3121.. but if your listening to it because he does alot of different stuff then you need to get out more. you make Prince sound like McDonalds.

The white stripes do some great country covers btw

I realise after reading the thread that these nominations will be shot down based on lack of variety in style... Tom waits just does his own thing and it's never fits into a category.. blues/alternative/experimental... you can guarantee it'll be a trip and so while he may get 2 stars for variety he gets 10 for being quirky and cool and good.

prince on the other hand gets about 8* for variety and sadly 6* for quality...

Tricky! dude, you need to expose yourself to some quality latin music (and probably jazz and blues... how long has it been since you listened to anything besides prince anyway... seriously I'm just concerned for you)

BBoys- well they definately won't win this challenge, but they are still cool

Gee whiz! Where do u get the idea I only listen to Prince. He is my all-time favorite artist but I have other people I collect too. I don't think Prince the be all end all of music lol.

Folks the point of the challenge was not to say that Prince was the best or that the Folks u guys would list are not great artists in their own right.

The point was to appreicate how unique and special Prince actually is. A point I think many of us take for granted because we are A) too focused on the past B) spoiled because Prince has been so prolific and C) myopic in not looking at the larger musical landscape and realizing that the special ones are far and few between.

At some point people have to be realistic in regards to Prince. Some of u are carrying around expectations that aren't attainable even for someone as talented as Prince. He's not young and wild and fresh anymore. To have him producing music at the rate and quality he is right now is a blessing we should be grateful for. Instead we have to many people harping about what was. Time only moves in one direction.

If u can't appreciate where Prince is at as a 50yr old man then u would do yourself, Prince, and the satrified fans a favor in moving on to mor fulfilling musical adventures. Why come here and piss on the Parade? This is mainly pointing at those who feel so negatively about the music. The ones that act like they are mad at Prince for not living up to their expectations. Prince can only do what he can do.

I know, and I think Tom deserved more on that one too.

Still, i stand by my nomination... although he has only released 20 albums or so, I will even argue that Tom Waits has even had a greater career.. creating his own sound, writing/ producing most of his stuff/ playing a cap load of instruments/ writing for theatre/ great live performance (oh how I wish I could see him.. damn funny guy)/ he is number #4 on the Rolling Stone song writer list. he may not have released as much material, but he hasn't released any crap music either

I'm equally besotted with both these charming men.... but Tom Waits...

I still think you sound like you think of him as fast food

If I was Prince, I would actually be pretty offended by your comments. Do you think that being 50 gives him license to release crap. Do you think he produces an album and thinks.... 'well it isn't as good as my earlier work.. but hey, I'm 50... what do they expect from an old man'

Have you seen him lately, he will outlive us all and keep churning out music along the way. I think he has another 30 albums in him and I doubt I will like all of them (is that really so bad?)
but kind of interested too, because now that he is 50, I am expecting better things as he is forced further away from pop (I enjoy his trips into world of jazz)

Anyway... you're the one who called it a friggin challenge!
