Prince Fans Are Crackheads

It is time to start being real people. I know the blinded and stubborn ones will probably jump on this, but it is time to ask ourselves as true and dedicated Prince fans a serious question.

How does Prince see his fans? Does he really see us as fans or as re-occurring revenue?

Let’s consider the material Prince has produced since the turn of the millennium and even a little before that. We have to be honest and say that prince could have taken at least his last six to eight albums and made about three to four "great" albums. And we would have all waited the extra time to put those "great" albums together. Now don't get me wrong I have always loved the fact that Prince takes his music in different directions and tries new things but Prince knows when his music is great and when it's not so great. (its part of the reason he is as arrogant as he is). But he could have easily made those three to four "great" albums and released the rest of the material on NPGMC or 3121 knowing we all still would have bought it. And who knows he probably could of picked up a new generation of fans with those "great" albums.

Prince is the equivalent of a Drug Dealer and we are his Crack heads. He got us "hooked" early on with all of the "good shit" but once he saw we were addicted he went ahead and watered down his product knowing we were still going to buy it. How many of us get to the record store on Tuesday morning of a release date to get our "fix"? And how many of us sit around in between albums trying to find some "residue" floating around on the internet to keep us going until our next "hit"?

So essentially what has occurred is this phenomenon that occurs with all great fan bases. We hang on to what we can. But sadly in the end we are the only ones left. I think we all believe that Prince still has another Purple Rain, Diamonds & Pearls, prince, or Sign O' The Times left in him. But why does he have to make it more painful than it has to be? Or has Prince simply burned out? Is he on the last leg of a great career?

Or maybe as we try to figure it all out Billy had it right the whole time when he told The Kid, "No one digs your music but yourself." and us of course (most of the time).

Who cares?

Prince releases music and we buy it.

We either bear it, like it, love it, or listen to it on a loop whilst telling everybody else on the Org how awful it is.

Who cares how Prince sees us?

There are a fair few good observations, some of which I would almost agree with, but almost is about as far as i get. The word "classic" always tends to create confusion with regard to Prince. To the masses, there is probably only 1 album, which all can recount and is an acclaimed classic, naturally Purple Rain, for those with abit more interest in modern music, Sott and 1999 would probably be considered classic´s. After that you get into the realm of people who actually know something about music, then the whole meaning of classic takes on a completely different meaning, although to be fair, I dont think many serious music critics have bothered much to emphasis about Prince´s music since D&P. Thing is Prince was never really into pleasing the crowd, apart from tours, there he cant serve up what he really wants to play, so we get the greatest hits, in their glory. Hence, Prince does after shows.

Aftershows, arent they fantastic??

Have yet to hear a negative comment on the org about one, and I think the answer to that is, who else in mainstream music would, with a standing and an income of millions, be bothered their arse, going back on stage at 2am to play for a few hours, sometimes for only a handful of people. No one else does this, unless they have to do it. I imagine prince spent alot of time when he was young going to dingy venues, watching washed up musicians, who were capable of making fantastic music, but never made it off the runway.

Anyway, that is probably another story for another thread, as many things could be discussed here, at this point. To conclude, I think Prince has made only two albums, maybe 3, where he wanted to make an impact on the commercial market, thus have hits, by simply churning out the same ole thing, but with a new wrapper and there are massive amount of them w-rappers. Madonna being a prime example, although U2, Springsteen, MJ, The Stones etc Dont get me wrong, I have almost all albums from all these artists, or at least heard them thru, but it is all the same, simply wrapped up to appeal to the time they are in, but underneath the wrapper, it is still a cheeseburger or Mars bar.

BTW, crackheads love wrappers as well
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I would almost agree with you as well. lol. But I am not insisting that Prince create an album that is commercially acceptable. I am implying that Prince has not produced albums that he is capable of producing. prince, The Gold Experience, and I will even go so far as Come, were great albums without the commercial success of Purple Rain, Diamonds and Pearls and SOTT. I am simply saying that the quality we had become used to in the beginning simply is not there. And I feel it is in part because he knows that he still has his guaranteed number of sales every time regardless of what he puts out.

True, that is why i saw alot of good points in your thread, Prince does do this, he has the hardcore fanbase, but a really hardcore one, who will go from being totally Famactical to thin line of hatred. The Fams, do their thing, no harm to anyone, but some of the others, well they simply throw their toys (Prince music) out of the pram.

I think Imago once stated it brillaintly, "Prince hates his fans, and we love him for that"

That sums it all up, Prince is not really into pleasing anyone, it is a take it or leave it thing, and to be fair, he has mastered it
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Ok BEING fan ive come to realise that dude has more things going on with his life
other than just music maybe hes trying to make room for other things like he said in an interview NOT that dropping albums every year and making music (which he always does) is not important. I hate it when people forget the kind of musician he is which upredictable.
He doesnt hate his fans. Those that feel that way just want to get more turned on by thinking that..aint mad at ya just my opinion,
And yh however you want to put it im feeenin for his music. He is far from the end of his career.

Absolutely not Prince isn´t in the end of his career, we have much time to enjoy his talent, and I guess: to hear a music is a private choice and nobody makes me to listen anything, I choose myself

In a wierd way I agree. But I think Prince is the biggest addict of them all. He is addicted to his own music and churning it out at a rate of knots. But we love him for it!

Prince is little Minneapolis music factory and he has a reputation to live up to, which is the biggest outputter of music on the planet. And he does.

Where would we be without the naff. Without the extras, the fillers and the bits in between. That is all Prince and everything inbetween.

We would be so lost if he just recored his "good" stuff. What would be the point. Life would be so dull without Graffiti Bridge, without My Name is Prince, or even Gett Off.. I mean he would be so boring if he wasn't so odd. (And I mean that in a nice way)

That's what makes Prince, Prince. And that's why we love him so much. And talk about him so much!

They'ed be nothing to talk about if he recorded bog standard lyrics and bog standard songs.

God life would be boring....
