Moonbeam Levels or Free... I have a question 4 u. We all know that Moonbeam Levels was supposed to be on the 1999 album, but instead got bumped from the album in favor of Free.
Don't get me wrong, I love Free but if someone asks me which one should have made on the album, I would say Moonbeam Levels. What do you think?... MJ 'nuff said. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

I have never heard Moonbeam levels!
I'm not a fan of free myself, usually skip it when it comes on. "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

Moonbeam Levels.
I think Moonbeam will probably agree too. Some people are like Slinkies...

I prefer 'Moonbeam Levels',
but I can see why Prince chose 'Free'. It's more straightforward and commercial. 'Moonbeam Levels' is quite obtuse.

I prefer 'Moonbeam Levels'.
I remember when it originally surfaced as a bootleg and the title was thought to be 'A Better Place 2 Die', to me that is a much better title as it's so evocative. 'Moonbeam Levels' sounds like something out of a bad science fiction movie.

I don't remember if I've heard Moonbeam Levels before. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I believe that it is erroneously called "A Better Place To Die" quite often. If you have heard "A Better Place To Die," you have heard Moonbeam Levels. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

Definitely Moonbeam Levels- who will be the first to pick Free?

I admit that I prefer "Moonbeam Levels." However, I am quite glad that it is a little secret. I think "1999" is perfect the way it is. Although I unquestionably like "Moonbeam Levels" better, I am glad that "Free" made the cut. Strange that an orger named Moonbeam is the first to pick "Free."
In any case, my brother and I have had long discussions about this. We have agreed that we are ecstatic with the way Prince has chosen to release his albums. I'd prefer to have "Sign o' the Times" to "Dream Factory" and "Lovesexy" to "The Black Album."

I'll be first. I pick Free. It flows better with the album, IMO. Moonbeam Levels is too scary. yeah it goes with the apocalyptic theme of 1999, but it brings the party down. Free is a breather, not as much of a downer. It gives you time to recoup before it's time to shake ya ass again.

hell nah, Free is first!
Moonbeam Levels was made up by people 2 be 'the greatest bootleg'. It is very much over-rated, and the message is aiight, but it aint got no SOUL. Sorry 2 sound racist but it just aint got no black in it like the rest of 1999 did. I feel like I am very special liking Free the most and am very proud. It is a fantastic song. I sat and waited for years 2 hear Moonbeam Levels...when I heard that I was like...,"was that it?" u know? "What was so special about that?" What saved me from being mad after that song had went off though was "Make It Thru The Storm" Damn that song is nice! I like the song, but it's not all that Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

So...junior-high quality socio-political statement = black? Just curious, because I'm thinking that isn't what you were trying to say, yet it seems that's what you just said.

thanks for asking me to clarify. you're correct, that didn't look quite right. It's cool. I really like the lyrics though. They have sort of an ethereal approach toward the idea of freedom, which allows for people to read much into them. Maybe more valid as a spiritual statement than a social, or political statement.

What saved me from being mad after that song had went off though was "Make It Thru The Storm" Damn that song is nice! I like the song, but it's not all that The theme of "Moonbeam Levels" is VERY soulful. It is a plea for help, a hand outreached for any assistance. It comes from a place of such desperation and despair. How is that not soul? I think this goes back to the argument about a song being categorized under the "soul" genre and a song having soul. Annie Lennox has soul even though her music isn't necessarily "soul music." Likewise, Musiq Soulchild (what I've heard at least) has no soul even though his music falls under the "soul music" category. Thematically, "Moonbeam Levels" is about as soulful as it gets, despite the fact that sonically, it may not be classified as a "soul" song.
