I wonder...the vault

I wonder how many songs he has in the vault that he totally forgot about? Does he ever run across a song and say "O snap...I forgot about dis."

HAs anyone ever heard about the vault system...how is it stored, is backed up on something, does he have a data base so he came jsut look up by name, etc.?

I remember during the celeration the tour guide showed us the vault and said this is where all of the unreleased material is but the gems like Purple Rain, When Doves Cry and songs like that are in a different location.

Loads. I love how Miko said in an interview he used to copy Prince's old guitar licks and Prince would then compliment him on it and Miko would tell him he stole it.

Prince played SO many stuff, some things get recorded and forgotten about for sure.

Don't you know about the vault? They say that Prince write (and record!?) at least one song each day!!! Imagine how many songs that must be after 20-30 years in the business... Exaggerated maybe, with a bit of truth to it..!

don't know how he's stored it. there was a picture once of a shelve inside
the vault.

there were long and studied reports about the tapes deteriorating and the
process of baking tapes etc which prince reportedly hasn't done.

at this point i'm starting to think that some of the bootlegs may be the
only versions still existing if some of the stuff in the vault is really
that poorly stored.

i used to think those reports were bullshit and prince being a perfectionist
he would store that shit properly. but seeing how he treats his back catalog
in regards to remastering etc, i'm starting to think those tapes are hanging
on to the last shred of magnetized powder for dear life.

Thank you for the comments. The door to the vault wasn't that big so I wonder how big it is behind the door. I heard the same about the tracks being poorly stored...interesting. Thanks again for the comments.

Thanks to 'HamsterHuey' and 'geo4you' as well for keepin' it real. The rest of the fools keep folks from coming to the .org because you ask a question and they go crazy. As I have stated b4...if you don't have the answer move on...The sad thing is these are the folks that start dumb threads like "Does Prince wear blue socks?" hahahah I'm out..much love

I can believe that Prince has everything that he needs secured. If Prince felt that a certain time span would leave a recording unprotected, that Prince would take the time to remake those recordings. cool

Yup...If he as plans for thme he is protecting them. He won't even let us have post pictures...so he is protective... Now if he doesn't care...that is a different story.

Back on topic: I know some people will disagree, but I don't it's just Prince's interest and responsibility alone any more to see this material is preserved.

He has made a major contribution to popular music and culture of the time, and when that happens, that persons work, in one sense, no longer belongs to them solely, but their body of work is part of something greater than them.

If a working version of the Mona Lisa was discovered and showed her in a different pose or was painted in a different pallette, should that item be destroyed or kept from public view just because Da Vinci considered it not worthy or wanted to keep it private at the time he made it?

Part of Prince's legacy is his vast body of unreleased material, and these out-takes and unreleased tracks enrich his official output. Right now, it's his call, but it's important to preserve, and if he wasn't caring about them, I'd hope someone else with access was, with or without his knowledge.

Nah. I'm sure he has it taken care of. Prince flip flops on a lot of stuff, but he has always cared about his music and refered to them as his children. I think he's preserved them in some form or another. He wouldn't let the stuff just fade into non-existance.
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together
