I'd call it good planning. If I started listening to an album/CD and the first song was crap, there's a good chance I'm not going to get around to listening to the rest, or at least right away.

Actually I don't really like the song "3121". When I play the cd, I actually start with "Lolita" and end with 3121. LOL. And I usually skip around all his cds when i play them. The only album I play straight through is Lovesymbol. All the other are pick and choose. biggrin

What do you ean by works hard on track 1.? If you're talking about works hard to make the first track a hit, then I dissagree because there are eqaully goods songs (atleast two or three that are just as good as the first track on all of those examples you gave. I don't even think that Rave's first track was even release as an single, where as with all the other examples the first track was released. I don't think that Prince, (even though he knows how to make hits at will,) goes into the studio (most of the time, because to me The Vault sucked), saying, "ok, I'm going to make this the hit and not really believe in most of the rest of the CD." I think he goes in there and gives it his all at everything he does, (Not including the contract filler with WB).

What made you think that? Is it because you personally don't like the rest of the Cd's as much as track 1? Or did you get this from an interview he had or something?

You know what's REALLY funny? That Prince stopped having major album hits, except maybe Diamonds And Pearls AFTER he started tracking his albums on the CD format; before that, we had B-side openers like Uptown, Private Joy, Lady Cab Driver, Automatic, When Doves Cry, America, Kiss, The Cross, U Got The Look, It. Some of these iconic and well placed in the time frame the vinyl era presented Prince, double albums not included.

After CD hit, Prince started cramming below par material on albums. Or maybe his could not write songs to fill a coherent album on the CD format. Even good outings like The Gold Experience had a We March to dumb it down. I never understood how a song like that could oust the album version of the superb Days Of Wild.
