studio footage Does anyone know if there exists any footage of Prince in the studio. Way, way back in the days of Friday "Night Flight" (I believe) there was some special they did on Prince. I recall it showing him in the studio, wailing on some drums. I wish more of this material was widely available. Additionally, I heard a rumor a while back that there is actually a self-produced documentary on the making of '1999'. Maybe it's in "the vault" I guess maybe Warner Bros. can't touch that one (if it does exist). | |

The only studio footage I know of was from a short film done in 1989 of Prince on the bass playing a version of PARTY MAN. I know he is also in the special playing on the drums and keyboards and guitar but those are during rehearsals from 1987-88 on the Lovesexy tour.
In regards to a 1999 documentary, I have NEVER heard of that and have interviewed most of the people involved with the album. The closest thing I've heard about that was VH1 had a show on briefly that explored the origins of certain songs. A short story was created that had planned to interview several of the engineers (Peggy Mac for instance) and Jill Jones. I don't know how far it got before Prince told them that they couldn't use the track and the story was shelved. As far as I know, that is the only documentary about 1999 and it was about the song, and not the album. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018.
