I've been contemplating this lately. I think just like any other artist he has peaks and valleys. There's a lot of bitching about his new material, but I bet if he used a Lynndrum machine and the older production style all the haters would be sucking these albums off. Then again they would just be bitchin' about the lack of progress or experimentation.

Just my $.02 cool

There are a fair few good observations, some of which I would almost agree with, but almost is about as far as i get. The word "classic" always tends to create confusion with regard to Prince. To the masses, there is probably only 1 album, which all can recount and is an acclaimed classic, naturally Purple Rain, for those with abit more interest in modern music, Sott and 1999 would probably be considered classic´s. After that you get into the realm of people who actually know something about music, then the whole meaning of classic takes on a completely different meaning, although to be fair, I dont think many serious music critics have bothered much to emphasis about Prince´s music since D&P. Thing is Prince was never really into pleasing the crowd, apart from tours, there he cant serve up what he really wants to play, so we get the greatest hits, in their glory. Hence, Prince does after shows.

Aftershows, arent they fantastic??

Have yet to hear a negative comment on the org about one, and I think the answer to that is, who else in mainstream music would, with a standing and an income of millions, be bothered their arse, going back on stage at 2am to play for a few hours, sometimes for only a handful of people. No one else does this, unless they have to do it. I imagine prince spent alot of time when he was young going to dingy venues, watching washed up musicians, who were capable of making fantastic music, but never made it off the runway.

Anyway, that is probably another story for another thread, as many things could be discussed here, at this point. To conclude, I think Prince has made only two albums, maybe 3, where he wanted to make an impact on the commercial market, thus have hits, by simply churning out the same ole thing, but with a new wrapper and there are massive amount of them w-rappers. Madonna being a prime example, although U2, Springsteen, MJ, The Stones etc Dont get me wrong, I have almost all albums from all these artists, or at least heard them thru, but it is all the same, simply wrapped up to appeal to the time they are in, but underneath the wrapper, it is still a cheeseburger or Mars bar.

BTW, crackheads love wrappers as well

I would almost agree with you as well. lol. But I am not insisting that Prince create an album that is commercially acceptable. I am implying that Prince has not produced albums that he is capable of producing. prince, The Gold Experience, and I will even go so far as Come, were great albums without the commercial success of Purple Rain, Diamonds and Pearls and SOTT. I am simply saying that the quality we had become used to in the beginning simply is not there. And I feel it is in part because he knows that he still has his guaranteed number of sales every time regardless of what he puts out.

but isn't that just ur feelings/opinions on the music that has been released as not great or classic? music is subjective and perhaps ur not digging the music of late cause it's not up 2 ur standards of what he is capable of. i will say i loathe planet earth but i also people on this site and others that hail that album as a masterpiece. that's fine by me, it's just not my cup of tea but it doesn't mean that he hasn't come out with music that hasn't been enjoyable.

a lot of fans on this site seem 2 have been working 4 warner bros cause they seem 2 want prince 2 wait a few years and release a "classic" album. stop restricting the brother. let him do him and if u dig it and bite in2 it it's all good but if not then let someone else enjoy the pie.

and 4 the record:

big grin
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
