Bono in Latest Rolling Stone on Meeting Prince

In the Latest issue of Rolling Stone, there is a "photo album" of U2 over the past decade, with passages by BONO.

Regarding a photo of the groups' manager taking a snapshot of the group, BONO goes off on this weird tangent about meeting Prince a few years ago, saying:

" I believe in Prince almost as much as Prince believes in Prince, which is saying something". He goes on to describe Prince having "Slave" written on his cheek, and Bono asked him "WHY?", to which Prince said because he didn't own his recordings and masters, but U2 DID, and how did they manage that, to which Bono says something about taking a cut in royalities in exchange, so even though "Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" sold millions, they didn't get a lot of $$$.

Then Prince says something like ,"I've got a plan to RAKE in the dough; I'm gonna start a club and be #1 in the bank from all the so-called "fans"-the suckers in my dream factory! ha ha ha", then he wandered away.

Everything but that last paragraph is true. I made that one up. It is interesting to see BONO praise Prince, considering Prince slammed "Joshua Tree" in 1987, as it got more attention than "Sign o' the Times".

The exact quotes you can find in the ROLLING STONE issue with "The Simpsons" on the cover.

Cheers!

He never slammed JT...he just said that he could do their type of music but they couldnt do his. His beef wasn't with the band either per se, but the Grammy, record awards industry not taking those things into account.

I'll bet this is something Prince has not been willing to do.

At this year's Celebration, someone in the crowd would occasionally yell out "I love you Prince!". Prince would reply the same way every time by saying " I love u 2...but not the band." It was an obvious slam towards U2. He even one time replied "...but Bono's cool though."

What's his deal with U2?
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

He said "but not the band" probably to distinguish that he meant that "I love you too"..in other words "I love you also"...off the cuff and said "not the band". Then realizing his faux pas in being cruel, he said Bonos cool etc to make up for his rushed statement...its the praise that the band gets from the general media that he probably has beef with though.

Who's jealous?

There was nothing mean spirited or of a jealous matter in this quote. I think if anything Bono was respecting Prince.

I mean Prince does love Prince.

Let me guess you don't like U2?

LOL. Alot of ppl missed it at the celly (u missed that
one too). Prince made this comment during his
acoustic set. He said, "i love you too, but not the band"
and kept on playing...then told us, "ah, you missed that
one...(slowly)I love U 2...but not the band" LOL
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Nah man, he said this stuff also in Holland, I believe it's part of that "Telemarketers, Bill Collectors And Fans" song he did during the tour... He also explained the joke when noone seemed to get it, but that's just part of the act, since he did the same joke/explain stuff at this years celebration and tour...

"I Love U 2 but not the band...
Bono is cool tho.

Ok...don't hate me but:

I prefer JT to SOTT...maybe if it was released as Crystal Ball it would be different(that was phenom.)

It's well known that Prince & U" have the greatest respect for each other. Bono joined Prince in Dublin to sing the Cross in '95, Bono & Edge were at the Dublin ONA show.
