I ADORE Sinead O'Connor's version of this, but seeing Prince perform it live... was pretty incredible, quite emotional. I honestly don't know if it would have been such a big hit though if Prince had released it, I think Sinead really made that song her own. I didn't know at the time it was written by Prince - how many people did?!! Maybe I just missed that... boxed

I didn't know until I started to come to this website last year around August or so.
(and that Chaka Khan song too... I Feel 4 U)

I did like the Sinead O' Conner take and when I thought that when I heard Prince's version,
that I wouldn't like it because I already formed an impression of how the song is supposed to go,
but when I heard his version, it's quite different and it works too.

For some reason though, I feel more of an emotional connection to his version.

That's our guy, uh? wink

I personally listened to the Prince version first, back in 1993 when it was released live on 'The Hits/The B-sides' 3 cd set. I loved it. Only months later I heard the Sinead version.

The live version from the hits is horrible and chintzy. The Family original is nice, but kind of dull to be honest.

Sinead's version is definitive I guess, but the song has never been a favourite of mine, probably because Sineads version reached such a big saturation point.

I LOVE Sinead's album 'Am I not your Girl' too, if anyone hasn't heard it, you've GOT to... it's brilliant - her version of 'Don't cry for me Argentina' is amazing! cool

I've always been partial to The Family's version probably b/c that's the one I heard first. And it's of course really Prince's version with Paul Peterson's vocals over Prince's.
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

I think it´s a magnificent composition by Prince, one of his best imo .

I much prefer Sinead´s performance of the song though.

Prince gave it away to her and made her famous.

She even did'nt mention his name when the song was on the top.

So Prince invited her to his house in Chanhassen (Minniapolis)

Ask her for an explanation why she did'nt tell that the song was his

She went furious and left the house

And at last Prince did sing Nothing Compares 2U

And it makes it all right

I strongly recommend St Paul's impassioned live version from The Quest in 1998, complete with scream at the end.

He was never a gifted vocalist but on this evidence he has come a very long way.

I do think I prefer Sinead's version because it's more simple and direct.
I like better the One Nite Alone...Live version, though.
