Who is Marsha? I am listening to Let's Pretend We're Married, and he says "Look Marsha,I'm not saying this to be nasty". Who is this Marsha?

It's "MARTHA"
Prince had become absolutely obsessed with Martha Stewart after he realized that 100% of her recipes contained levels of Dehydrogenated Monoxide. At one time in Prince's career he was obsessed with 3 things: God, vaginas, and dehydrogenated monoxide. Martha embodied all three.

No,silly On "Insatible",he's referring to Martha Quinn, that popular MTV VJ who had a crush on Prince in the 80s

It's "Fuck you, Marcia..." We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Usually DTT is pretty right on with lyrics, but I just looked up this one, and they have it as: "Look here, martian..."

Nobody on here remembers this of course and if they do, they won't cop to it (except for funkpill) but I wrote a thread about this very thing well over a year ago. In the thread, I stated that P said "Marcia, I sincerly want to fuck the taste out of your mouth." Then a few folks stated that they heard him say "Martian"...Whatever. To my ears, he says "Marcia". I even remember juliepurplehead posting a pic of Marsha Warfield from Night Court. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

i remember your thread . something about white women and marsha from the brady bunch There u go... I believe the name of the thread was "The 1999 Album and the White Girl Element". I talked about how prominent Lisa, & J.J. (although she's mixed) were on that album and the situations P placed them in. White girls in a black setting (funk). Nobody was doing that on albums then. Tracks like D.M.S.R, where Lisa screams at the end "Somebody help me...Somebody call the police" and the music to that track is one of the funkiest on the album. ( a black setting) "Lady Cab Driver" another straight funk song, P is laying it to Jill. "Automatic" with Lisa and J.J. moaning and shit. Same thing. P was painting a visual picture sound wise with these tracks (funk) and then placing Lisa and Jill's vocals to contrast with that enviroment. Basically white girls at a black party. "Somebody help me...Somebody call the police".. Nowadays, it's not an issue but back in 82, although I dated white girls, inter-racial dating wasn't hardly as accepted then as now. Or as widespread. So in P's mindset, back when this album came out, was to go against the grain, to shock. Like he's always done. That was my take on one of the elements on that album. So are you saying, that you believe that by using the name Marcia, Prince is letting the listeners know that it is specifically a white girl he is referring to? So the name Marica is being used much like the common use of the name "Becky" to mean "white chic" nowadays? Oh. My. God, Becky!! Interesting.

Yeah,,not saying that black girls aren't named Marcia or Marsha cuz their are. But I think P picked that name (if indeed he's actually saying "Marcia" and not "martian") because it does evoke in peoples minds Marcia Brady. It's all about imagery. Now of course, there's people on here who can't wait to flip out over this so get in line but yeah, that's what I always thought. Just my opinion though, you know. It's pretty interesting that a simple name metioned in a song can evoke thoughts of wondering who this person was,if it was even somebody real. [Edited 8/6/08 20:46pm] Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach

That's what I mentioned earlier. When I did a thread on this myself a long time ago, that was part of the topic. Marcia or martian. To me, I hear Marcia. I don't hear the "n" at the end. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Ok, I've listened to it on two different sets of headphones, like 20 times...It sounds like he is saying "Look here Martian, I sincerely..." I always though it was Marcia cause, well Martian makes no sense at all (unless he originally had a whole space theme concept (i.e. Moonbeam Levels)). It really does sound like he is saying Martian, though.
