I'm convinced he was talking about Mani. Shortly after 3121 was released she filed for divorce. IMO many songs on that cd was referencing her...i.e Fury, Love, Incense and Candles and possibly Satisfied and The Word.

And I am convinced that it was Mayte... since he talks about dancing and everyone knows Mayte was the dancer in his life... and talks about all that long pretty hair and those hips.... it just seems like he is describing Mayte.

Also I have read that the Dance was an Emancipation outtake that he released just a couple of years later on the Chocolate Invasion.

Mani although has pretty hair, seemed slim in the hips, and I have always heard was rather shy and reserved dancer.

The fact that Mayte was a dancer is why I think it isn't about her - but about someone who came after her.

He's already fallen in love with one dancer...and knows it's a weak spot for him. So he doesn't want to see anyone else dance - because it's how he fell in love before and he doesn't want to risk his heart again.

and see to me, it is a song to someone who has has had a relationship with and it ended badly for him, and the woman want to continue contact "be friends" ya know... "why don't you come see my new show (e.g. dance) and he is telling he no he can't do that because he will fall in love with her again.

The subject is someone who has had torrid sex with him, against the pole, the stairs etc. And also someone who spent all day in the mirror, but time well spent since he thought she look desirable... (that hair, those hips).

I dunno, I always thought it was a song about Mayte for those reasons listed.... but who knows. shrug
At any rate, a very beautiful song and my favorite from this CD. I had my player on repeat for this song and I fell asleep everynight to it for about a month
