Did prince ever record a Classic popsong? Yeah yeah, i'm gonna get flamed for this, but here is my point:
There ara a lot of listener-defined top 100's 2000's and whatever here on Dutch radio. Some even about s specific period, let's day the eighties. I find it stunning that Prince is never that high in the rankings. So, IMO Purple Rain is a classic rocksong. Maybe we have heard it to much, but i think you can call it a classic. How come Prince never makes it to the top 10 of these 'polls' ? Why are there always like 5 U2 songs above Prince? In other words, we orgers probably agree that he made al ot of classics, but why don't the others (the general public) agree with us, at least on a few songs? (Purple Rain, 1999, KISS, SOTT) [Edited 7/10/08 7:10am]

It's down to the people voting. These sorts of polls are just opinion. They get printed and people think they're official facts issued by the government or something. Classic pop songs? Cream, Raspberry Beret, U Got The Look?

It depends when the poll is taken. If this poll had been taken in 1985, Prince would probably have had 6 or 7 songs in the top 100.

That's my point: a classic song would still be remembered (like a lot of the U2 stuff from the eighties). And i am talking about polls at stations that broadcast music from the eighties, or are not aiming at the present pop music.

I think it's because even his more 'classic' type pop songs can't really be 'classified' or put in any one 'genre', maybe...and I think most of the general public think of Kiss (although quite a lot think that's Tom Jones) and/or U Got the Look when it comes to Prince and that's about IT! (Maybe Raspberry Beret, D&P and Cream ... they can remember the words to those ones too!)

I remember when "Pop-Life," was mixed into songs in the 80's, alongside of "Rasberry Beret," and "Little-Red Corvette." and "1999" and today...U don't hear "Pop-Life," anymore...I don't know the answers to these questions...I just know that I have very little control to change anything in this world. But a song from the 80's is a song from the 80's. It is just that somebody so populair in that era seems to be forgotten by a lot of people. Other songs stay better in peoples heads (and therefore are classic?) or what? [Edited 7/10/08 13:46pm]

I DO think the general public considers certain Prince songs "classics". Although songs like Rasberry Beret (which I never liked, except for the intro on the 12') gets played to DEATH, I think the one song that is considered by the masses as a classic by Prince is Little Red Corvette. Another one that I think the general public sees as a classic is When Doves Cry. The title song "Purple Rain" definately. I'm not talking Prince fans, I'm talking the general public. I believe those 3 songs are what pops up in folks minds regarding Prince because I think those songs are held in the highest esteem with the general public regarding Prince. i would say 'kiss' but to call it strickly pop would be an understatement because it fuses funk/soul e.t.c.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
so is there such a type of song by prince for the general public? cause i agree with the whole fuse together or just one genre and it's a sort of hard thing to put your finger on just excatly what type of song prince does unless well you are a fan who really checks out his music and heck, thats sometimes hard to pinpoint it out on everything. it's up in the air often..which is cool. follow the leader follow the leader

I think Prince was a very big influence in pop music in the 80's, but a lot of his popularity of those days has faded, so that even when the public is sked for the greatest hits of the 80's, prince isn't exactly the first that comes to mind. Must say (admit?) though that the other 2 big names (Madonna and MJ) are lower in those lists i mentioned before.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't like Raspberry Beret, whenever I hear that being played I'm like 'groan'...well I kind of like it in the context of the album, and I quite like the video but...I'd never actually choose to play it! It was good fun at the O2 though, because then we could sing/shout to him that we LOVED him..and he'd do that 'I love you too' thing - that was sweet!

blackguitaristz how can you NOT like Rasberry Beret?? The lyrics are classic! It's one of the best songs ever written. It's witty and really unerstated. Classic Prince! Shut up already, damn.

U got the look and I would die 4 u need a mention here. And if you were like me(in your 30's) and still bought singles, had the added pleasure of the b sides. Erotic city, 17 days, She's always in my hair and many more.
Prince recorded many a classic. Many of his best were only found by the fans who bought and searched for more.

There is more then Purple Rain IMO.
When you were mine and Raspberret Beret especially are songs covered and played by al sort of musicians and people. And when it comes to songs that connect to people in terms of lyrics, i think you can't rule out: How come you don't call me anymore and Nothing compares to You. Many people don't even know Prince wrote these songs.

Next to that Prince has done a bunch of groundbreaking songs, that probably don't ring a bell among these 'classic rock' admirers.
I mean: When doves Cry, Kiss and Sign of the Times, are very innovative songs, soundwise, that have had a lot of impact on musical producers all over the world.
